Questions & Answers about Dit zijn de voorwaarden als je je wilt aanmelden.
Why does the sentence use Dit zijn (This are) instead of Deze zijn (These are)?
In Dutch, when introducing or identifying what something is with a demonstrative pronoun (this/that/these/those), you always use the neutral singular form dit or dat, regardless of the noun. Because voorwaarden (conditions) is plural, the verb changes to match it (zijn), but the pronoun stays as dit. So, Dit zijn is the correct way to say "These are".
Why are there two je's right next to each other in als je je wilt aanmelden?
The verb zich aanmelden (to sign up / to register) is a reflexive verb in Dutch. The first je is the subject meaning "you", and the second je is the reflexive pronoun meaning "yourself". Literally, the phrase translates to "if you yourself want to sign up".
This lesson is about verb-first conditional clauses. How could we rewrite this sentence to use that structure instead of using als?
To use conditional inversion (dropping als and starting with the verb), the condition usually needs to come at the beginning of the sentence. We would start with the verb Wil, and we would typically add dan (then) to connect it to the main clause: Wil je je aanmelden, dan zijn dit de voorwaarden. (Literally: Want you yourself to sign up, then are these the conditions).
Why are the verbs wilt aanmelden placed at the very end of the sentence?
