Mijn laptop is kapot, mag ik de jouwe lenen?

Questions & Answers about Mijn laptop is kapot, mag ik de jouwe lenen?

Why do we use de jouwe here instead of het jouwe?
Independent possessive pronouns take either de or het depending on the gender of the noun they are replacing. Because it replaces laptop, which is a de-word (de laptop), you must use de jouwe. If you were replacing a het-word like het boek, you would use het jouwe.
How is de jouwe formed compared to the normal word for "your"?
The regular possessive pronoun for "your" is jouw (as in jouw laptop). To change it into the independent pronoun "yours", you add an -e to the end to make jouwe, and place de or het in front of it.
Why is the verb lenen at the very end of the sentence?
The second part of the sentence uses the modal verb mogen (to be allowed to), conjugated here as mag. In Dutch, when a clause has a modal verb, any other verbs like lenen (to borrow) are pushed to the very end of that clause.
Why does the second part say mag ik instead of ik mag?
Because the second half is a question. To form a yes/no question in Dutch, you swap the position of the subject (ik) and the verb (mag). This swapping is called inversion.
