Questions & Answers about Je hebt de deken toch niet nodig?

Why is the word toch used here?

In this sentence, toch is a modal particle that turns a statement into a question asking for confirmation. It is like adding 'right?' or 'surely?' at the end of an English sentence. The speaker assumes you don't need the blanket, but wants to double-check.

What happens if I leave out toch?

Without toch, the sentence sounds much more direct and flat: 'You don't need the blanket?' Adding toch softens the tone, making it friendlier and showing that you are just checking in with the other person.

Why are hebt and nodig separated from each other?

The Dutch translation for 'to need' is the phrase nodig hebben (literally: to have necessary). In a regular sentence, the conjugated verb (hebt) takes the second position, while the rest of the phrase (nodig) gets pushed to the very end.

Why does niet come right before nodig?

When negating a sentence with a split verb phrase like nodig hebben, the word niet goes right before the part that was sent to the end. Since nodig sits at the end of the sentence, niet goes immediately in front of it.
