Why aren't maart and april capitalized?
In Dutch, the names of the months, days of the week, and seasons are always written with lowercase letters, unless they happen to be the first word of a sentence.
Does Dutch always use in before a month, just like English?
Yes! When you want to say something happens during a specific month, you use the preposition in in Dutch, exactly as you do in English (for example, in maart, in april).
Why does the sentence use Er zijn for "There are"?
Er is a very common word in Dutch! When you want to introduce that something exists or is present somewhere (just like "there is" or "there are" in English), you use er is or er zijn. You wouldn't use daar, because daar specifically points to a physical location ("over there").
Why does the plural word vogels end in -s instead of -en?
While most Dutch plural words end in -en, words that end in an unstressed sound like -el, -er, or -en usually just get an -s added to the end. Since vogel ends in -el, the plural is simply vogels.
