Gaan we naar het park, of blijven we thuis?

Questions & Answers about Gaan we naar het park, of blijven we thuis?

Why does the second part say blijven we instead of we blijven?
The word of (or) links two separate sentences together without changing their normal word order. Because the second part is also a question, it uses the question word order: the verb blijven comes before the subject we, just like Gaan we in the first half.
The English translation says 'are we going', so why is there no verb for 'are' in Gaan we?
Dutch does not use an 'are doing' form like English does. The simple verb gaan covers both 'go' and 'are going'. To ask 'Are we going?', you simply put the verb first to make it a question: Gaan we?
Why is there no word for 'at' before thuis?
The word thuis already means 'at home' all by itself. If you wanted to say 'to home' as a destination, you would use the phrase naar huis, but because you are staying at your house in this sentence, thuis is the exact word you need.
Can the word of also connect single words instead of whole sentences?
Yes! The word of means 'or' and can connect whole sentences like it does here, but you can also use it for simple choices between words, like koffie of thee (coffee or tea).
