Questions & Answers about Is hier een oud museum?
Why is it oud and not oude?
The word museum is a het word (het museum). When a het word is singular and comes after een (a/an), the adjective before it does not get an extra -e at the end. This is one of the most important rules for adjectives in Dutch!
How do I know if museum is a de word or a het word?
You usually just have to memorize whether a word takes de or het. However, seeing een oud museum gives you a massive clue: because oud has no -e at the end, you immediately know museum must be a het word.
Why does the sentence say Is hier instead of Is er?
Hier specifically means here, while er means there. The sentence literally translates to Is here an old museum? English prefers to say Is there... here?, but Dutch is happy to skip the dummy word and just ask Is here...?
Could I also use er in this sentence?
Yes, you could say Is er hier een oud museum? (Is there an old museum here?). Both are perfectly fine, but dropping er is shorter and very common in spoken Dutch when you already have a specific location word like hier.
