Questions & Answers about Mi ne razumijemo to pitanje.
Why is there no word for "do" in the Croatian sentence for "do not understand"?
In English, we use "do not" to make a verb negative. In Croatian, it is much simpler! You just put the negation particle ne directly before the verb. So, ne razumijemo literally means "not understand", which translates to "do not understand".
Do I always have to use the word Mi (we) in sentences like this?
No, you can usually drop it! Because the verb ending in razumijemo (-mo) already tells us that "we" are the ones doing the action. Saying Ne razumijemo to pitanje is a perfectly natural and common way to say this. Adding Mi just puts a little extra emphasis on we.
How do I know that to pitanje is neuter?
You can usually guess a noun's gender by its ending. The word pitanje (question) ends in -e, which is a very common ending for neuter nouns in Croatian. Because the noun is neuter, the pointing word must match it, which is why we use the neuter form to instead of the masculine taj or feminine ta.
The translation says "this question", but doesn't to mean "that"?
