Negating Verbs with ne
To negate a verb, place the particle ne directly in front of it. It is always written as a separate word.
| I do not eat meat. | Ja ne jedem meso. |
| She does not drink beer, only wine. | Ona ne pije pivo, samo vino. |
| Excuse me, I do not hear well. | Oprostite, ne čujem dobro. |
Dropping Pronouns and Asking Questions
Subject pronouns (ja, ti, etc.) are optional. When omitted, ne often begins the sentence.
| I do not understand Croatian. | Ne razumijem hrvatski. |
In questions, ne also stays right next to the verb.
| Why do you not eat fruit and vegetables? | Zašto ne jedeš voće i povrće? |
The Double Negative
Croatian uses double negatives. When using a negative word like nikada (never), you must still put ne before the verb.
| never | nikada |
| They never drink wine. | Oni nikada ne piju vino. |
| Who never drinks beer? | Tko nikada ne pije pivo? |
