Question 1

Why does the word for bitter, gorak, have an 'a' here when the feminine form is gorka?

Accepted Answer

The letter a in gorak is a fleeting 'a' (nepostojano a). It appears in the masculine nominative (dictionary) form because Croatian avoids ending words with certain awkward consonant clusters like '-rk'. However, when you add a vowel ending for other genders or cases, such as the feminine -a, that fleeting a disappears. That is why it is gorak for tea (masculine) but gorka for coffee (feminine).

Question 2

The English translation says "if", so why does the sentence use je li instead of ako?

Accepted Answer

English uses "if" for two different things: conditions (If it rains, I will stay) and indirect questions (I wonder if it is raining). In Croatian, ako is strictly for conditions. For indirect questions where you could replace "if" with "whether", you must use je li.

Question 3

Why is the word for mint mentom and not menta?

Accepted Answer

The preposition s (meaning "with" in the sense of accompaniment or ingredients) always requires the instrumental case. Since menta is a standard feminine noun ending in -a, its instrumental form changes the ending to -om, resulting in s mentom.

Question 4

Could I use the definite adjective form gorki at the end of this sentence instead?

Accepted Answer

No, it sounds unnatural here. When an adjective comes after the verb "to be" to describe the subject (The tea is bitter), Croatian prefers the short, indefinite form like gorak. You would use the definite form gorki if you were attaching it directly to the noun, like in ovaj gorki čaj (this bitter tea).
