Learn how to order complex coffees, discuss roasting and brewing methods, and expand your everyday food and drink vocabulary at the local café.
Ordering Your Coffee
When you visit a coffee shop, you will usually be served by a barista. Note that although barista ends in "-a", it is a masculine noun when referring to a male barista, so it takes masculine adjectives. However, it follows the feminine declension pattern for its noun endings. The most common drink to order is, of course, an espresso.
From Bean to Grind
A great cup of coffee begins with the coffee bean (zrno). You can discuss the style of roasting (prženje) to find a flavor you like. Before brewing, the barista must grind (mljeti) the coffee to ensure it is fresh.
Preparation and Brewing
Everyone has their own preference for how their coffee is prepared. You might ask for a lot of milk foam (pjena) on top of your drink, or perhaps you prefer a simpler brewing method like filter coffee.
Tasting Notes and Alternatives
When describing the taste of your coffee, you might mention its acidity (kiselost) or bitterness (gorčina). If you love the taste but want to skip the caffeine, you can ask for a decaffeinated (beskofeinski) option. Because beskofeinski is an adjective, its ending changes to match the gender of the noun it modifies.
