Influir means "to influence" and belongs to the family of -uir verbs (excluding -guir and -quir, which follow different rules). These verbs share a distinctive feature: a y is inserted before vowel endings a, e, o in many present-tense forms, because the Spanish ear can't comfortably handle two weak vowels in a row without it.
Other common verbs in this family include construir ("to build"), destruir ("to destroy"), huir ("to flee"), concluir ("to conclude"), and contribuir ("to contribute"). Learn one and you essentially know them all.
Present Indicative
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influyo |
| tú | influyes |
| él / ella / usted | influye |
| nosotros / nosotras | influimos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influyen |
Notice the y in every form except nosotros, which keeps the plain i because the ending -imos already contains a strong vowel after the stem.
La música influye mucho en mi estado de ánimo.
Music has a big influence on my mood.
Tus palabras me influyen.
Your words influence me.
Preterite
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influí |
| tú | influiste |
| él / ella / usted | influyó |
| nosotros / nosotras | influimos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influyeron |
The third-person forms (influyó, influyeron) take a y, because an i between two vowels would otherwise become silent or awkward.
Ese libro influyó mucho en mi forma de pensar.
That book greatly influenced my way of thinking.
Imperfect
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influía |
| tú | influías |
| él / ella / usted | influía |
| nosotros / nosotras | influíamos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influían |
The imperfect is regular — no y needed, because the endings start with í, which carries its own stress and doesn't collapse.
En esa época, la iglesia influía en todas las decisiones.
At that time, the church influenced every decision.
Future
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influiré |
| tú | influirás |
| él / ella / usted | influirá |
| nosotros / nosotras | influiremos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influirán |
Conditional
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influiría |
| tú | influirías |
| él / ella / usted | influiría |
| nosotros / nosotras | influiríamos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influirían |
Tu opinión influiría mucho en mi decisión.
Your opinion would have a big influence on my decision.
Present Subjunctive
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influya |
| tú | influyas |
| él / ella / usted | influya |
| nosotros / nosotras | influyamos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influyan |
All six subjunctive forms take a y, including nosotros, because every ending now starts with a.
No quiero que influyas en su decisión.
I don't want you to influence her decision.
Imperfect Subjunctive (-ra forms)
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | influyera |
| tú | influyeras |
| él / ella / usted | influyera |
| nosotros / nosotras | influyéramos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | influyeran |
Imperative
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| tú (affirmative) | influye |
| tú (negative) | no influyas |
| usted | influya |
| nosotros | influyamos |
| ustedes | influyan |
Non-Finite Forms
- Infinitive: influir
- Gerund: influyendo
- Past participle: influido
The gerund also takes a y (influyendo), following the same rule: the ending -iendo would otherwise produce a collapsed, difficult-to-pronounce -iiendo.
Common Uses
Influir typically takes the preposition en before its object: influir en alguien, influir en una decisión. It can also take sobre in more formal contexts: influir sobre la opinión pública. The noun form is influencia, and the common adjective is influyente ("influential").
Las redes sociales influyen en los jóvenes.
Social media influences young people.
No dejes que eso influya en ti.
Don't let that influence you.
