2. Erase, remove, get rid of
Détruire is also the standard verb for the controlled destruction of records, evidence, or unwanted items: documents, files, weapons, virus samples, computer data.
Les services secrets ont détruit tous les rapports compromettants.

In computing contexts, supprimer (delete) is often the preferred everyday verb for individual files; détruire applies more often to bulk or irreversible erasure (entire disks, archives).
3. Devastate (psychological/emotional)
Détruire is the standard French verb for emotional or psychological devastation. Cette nouvelle l'a détruit — That news destroyed him. It is stronger than English "upset" and lines up with English "devastate," "shatter," or "crush." This use is extremely common in everyday speech.
La mort de sa femme l'a complètement détruit.
His wife's death completely destroyed him.
Cette dépression l'a détruit pendant des années.
That depression devastated him for years.
Ne dis pas ça, ça va la détruire.
Don't say that, it'll devastate her.
The participle détruit used as a predicate adjective (il est détruit) is a common everyday hyperbole: "I'm wrecked / shattered / exhausted." After a difficult day or a long workout, je suis détruit is normal informal speech.

Détruire extends to abstract objects that can be undermined or undone: a reputation, an argument, a relationship, a career, an alliance, a theory.
