The simple verb زدن means “hit/strike,” and that contact meaning motivates many compounds: ضربه زدن “strike,” دست زدن “touch/applaud,” مُهر زدن “stamp.” Its compound uses extend much further, however: حرف زدن “talk,” زنگ زدن “call,” قدم زدن “take a walk,” مسواک زدن “brush one's teeth,” and حدس زدن “guess.”
English has no single verb joining these meanings. The metaphor of a short, agentive act can help explain the family, but it cannot predict which noun chooses زدن. Each complete compound and its complement frame must be learned as a lexical predicate. This is the same whole-predicate principle developed in Compound Verbs as Single Lexical Predicates.
From physical contact to conventional action
Several recurrent meaning groups organize the most useful compounds:
| Meaning family | Compound | Usual frame | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| impact/contact | ضربه زدن | به چیزی ضربه زدن | neutral |
| contact/interaction | دست زدن | به چیزی دست زدن؛ برای کسی دست زدن | neutral |
| speech/signal | حرف زدن، زنگ زدن، فریاد زدن | با کسی حرف زدن؛ به کسی زنگ زدن | neutral; حرف زدن conversational |
| routine activity | قدم زدن، مسواک زدن | usually agentive; duration or location optional | neutral |
| bounded judgment | حدس زدن | content as object or clause | neutral |
| marking | مُهر زدن | agent + marked document/object | administrative-neutral |
The connection with literal impact remains clearest in ضربه زدن, but it is largely historical or metaphorical in حرف زدن and حدس زدن. Translating the light verb as “hit” inside every compound produces nonsense.
توپ به شیشه ضربه زد، اما شیشه نشکست.
tup be shishe zarbe zad, ammâ shishe na-shekast.
The ball struck the glass, but the glass did not break. (neutral standard; physical impact)
بعد از شام کنار رودخانه قدم زدیم.
ba'd az shâm kenâr-e rudkhâne qadam zadim.
After dinner, we took a walk by the river. (neutral conversation; routine activity)
قبل از خواب حتما مسواک بزن.
qabl az khâb hatman mesvâk bezan.
Be sure to brush your teeth before bed. (neutral conversation; routine action)
Agentivity—and its limits
Many زدن compounds have an intentional human agent: someone calls, talks, walks, stamps, or guesses. The subject controls زدن, and a specific direct object takes را where the compound is transitive.
کارمند اداره روی هر دو نسخه مهر زد.
kârmand-e edâre ru-ye har do noskhe mohr zad.
The office employee stamped both copies. (administrative-neutral; deliberate marking)
میتوانی حدس بزنی داخل جعبه چیست؟
mi-tavâni hads bezani dâkhel-e ja'be chist?
Can you guess what is inside the box? (neutral conversation; content clause)
The whole predicate can weaken strict agentivity. باران به پنجره میزد “rain was beating against the window” has an inanimate subject, and نبض زدن describes a bodily process. So “زدن compounds always have deliberate agents” is too strong. The accurate generalization is that many core compounds inherit a dynamic, eventive profile, but lexical meaning can override it.
باران تمام شب به پنجره میزد.
bârân tamâm-e shab be panjare mi-zad.
Rain beat against the window all night. (neutral descriptive prose; inanimate subject)
Bounded event or extended activity?
Many compounds naturally denote a countable event: یک زنگ زدن “make one call,” یک حدس زدن “make a guess,” مُهر زدن “apply a stamp.” This bounded profile fits the source meaning “strike.” But حرف زدن and قدم زدن can continue for an open duration.
فقط یک بار زنگ زدم و پیغام گذاشتم.
faqat yek bâr zang zadam va peyghâm gozâshtam.
I called only once and left a message. (neutral conversation; bounded call)
تا نیمهشب دربارهی سفر حرف زدیم.
tâ nime-shab darbâre-ye safar harf zadim.
We talked about the trip until midnight. (neutral conversation; extended activity)
Aspect therefore comes from the whole predicate plus context, not from زدن alone. A duration phrase is natural with قدم زدن, while a count expression is natural with حدس زدن. Learners should resist a rigid “زدن always makes an instant” rule.
Speech and contact frames
Prepositions distinguish participants and sometimes meanings:
- با کسی حرف زدن — talk with someone
- دربارهی چیزی حرف زدن — talk about something
- به کسی زنگ زدن — call someone
- به چیزی دست زدن — touch/tamper with something
- برای کسی دست زدن — applaud someone
- به چیزی ضربه زدن — hit/strike something
امشب باید با خواهرم دربارهی اسبابکشی حرف بزنم.
emshab bâyad bâ khâhar-am darbâre-ye asbâb-keshi harf bezanam.
Tonight I need to talk with my sister about the move. (neutral conversation; two complement phrases)
وقتی رسیدی، به من زنگ بزن.
vaqti residi, be man zang bezan.
Call me when you arrive. (neutral conversation; زنگ زدن به)
لطفا به وسایل روی میز دست نزنید.
lotfan be vasâyel-e ru-ye miz dast na-zanid.
Please do not touch the items on the table. (polite neutral; دست زدن به)
تماشاگران برای گروه موسیقی دست زدند.
tamâshâgarân barâ-ye goruh-e musiqi dast zadand.
The audience applauded the musical group. (neutral standard; دست زدن برای)
The change from به to برای helps disambiguate “touch” from “applaud,” although context also matters. These frames belong to the compound, not to زدن as an abstract light verb.
Lexical selection: nearby compounds are not interchangeable
Persian says عکس گرفتن, not عکس زدن, for taking a photograph. It says تصمیم گرفتن, not تصمیم زدن, for deciding. Conversely, “make a call” is زنگ زدن, and “brush teeth” is مسواک زدن. English wording offers no safe formula.
از منظره عکس گرفتم و بعد به مادرم زنگ زدم.
az manzare aks gereftam va ba'd be mâdar-am zang zadam.
I took a photo of the view and then called my mother. (neutral conversation; گرفتن versus زدن)
Even apparently transparent combinations have conventional details. تلفن زدن occurs in conversation, but زنگ زدن به کسی is the most broadly useful everyday entry for “call someone.” صحبت کردن is neutral and can sound more formal than conversational حرف زدن; neither is wrong.
Inflection and conversational forms
Only زدن inflects: حرف میزنم، حرف زدم، حرف نزدم، حرف بزن. The present stem is زن; the past stem is زد. Standard میزند / میزنند corresponds to Tehran میزنه / میزنن (informal: Tehran).
— به تعمیرکار زنگ زدی؟ — آره، گفت عصر میاد.
— be ta'mirkâr zang zadi? — âre, goft asr miyâd.
— Did you call the repair technician? — Yeah, he said he'll come this evening. (informal: Tehran)
Do not attach می to the noun, pluralize the noun merely to agree with a plural subject, or cite only زدن as the lemma for “talk.” The lexical entry is حرف زدن.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating زدن literally inside a compound
❌ دیروز دو ساعت با دوستم سخن را زدم.
Incorrect — ‘talk’ is lexicalized as حرف زدن or صحبت کردن, not a literal object meaning ‘speech.’
✅ دیروز دو ساعت با دوستم حرف زدم.
diruz do sâ'at bâ dust-am harf zadam.
Yesterday I talked with my friend for two hours.
2. Choosing زدن by copying an English light verb
❌ از گربهی همسایه یک عکس زدم.
Incorrect — taking a photograph is عکس گرفتن.
✅ از گربهی همسایه یک عکس گرفتم.
az gorbe-ye hamsâye yek aks gereftam.
I took a photo of the neighbor's cat.
3. Omitting the selected preposition
❌ وقتی رسیدی، من زنگ بزن.
Incorrect — the person called is introduced with به.
✅ وقتی به ایستگاه رسیدی، به من زنگ بزن.
vaqti be istgâh residi, be man zang bezan.
Call me when you reach the station.
4. Using را with the target of ضربه زدن
❌ توپ شیشه را ضربه زد.
Incorrect for the compound ضربه زدن — its target is normally introduced by به.
✅ شاخهی درخت به شیشه ضربه زد.
shâkhe-ye derakht be shishe zarbe zad.
The tree branch struck the window.
5. Moving می onto the nominal element
❌ ما بعد از شام میقدم زدیم.
Incorrect — می attaches to the light verb: قدم میزدیم.
✅ آن تابستان هر شب کنار ساحل قدم میزدیم.
ân tâbestân har shab kenâr-e sâhel qadam mi-zadim.
That summer we used to walk by the shore every night.
Key Takeaways
- Compounds with زدن extend from physical contact to speech, signals, routine activities, and judgments.
- Many are dynamic and agentive, but the whole predicate can permit extended events or inanimate subjects.
- Frames distinguish participants and meanings: زنگ زدن به, حرف زدن با, دست زدن به/برای.
- The source metaphor does not license free coinage; learn عکس گرفتن beside زنگ زدن.
- Only زدن inflects: حرف میزنم، حرف زدم، حرف بزن.
