Core Compounds with داشتن

In compounds such as دوست داشتن “like/love,” نیاز داشتن “need,” حق داشتن “have the right,” and خبر داشتن “know/be informed,” داشتن presents a state or continuing relation rather than a bounded action. It carries person and tense, while the nonverbal partner supplies the specific kind of attitude, entitlement, connection, or experience.

The resemblance to English have is useful only up to a point. English says “have breakfast,” “have a look,” and “have become,” but Persian does not copy those combinations with داشتن. The established Persian compound and its complement pattern must be learned whole. The independent verb and its irregular present are introduced in the داشتن reference.

A family of states and relations

Core داشتن compounds fall into several overlapping groups:

RelationCompound and frameMeaningRegister
attitudeکسی/چیزی را دوست داشتنlike or love someone/somethingneutral
necessityبه چیزی نیاز داشتنneed somethingneutral
entitlementحق داشتن که...have the right to...neutral/formal
knowledgeاز چیزی خبر داشتنknow/be informed about somethingneutral
connectionبا چیزی ارتباط داشتنbe connected/related to somethingformal-neutral
relevanceبرای کسی اهمیت داشتنmatter to someoneneutral

These predicates profile a condition that holds over time. They can certainly begin, end, or be located in the past, but their lexical core is stative.

من موسیقی سنتی ایران را خیلی دوست دارم.

man musiqi-ye sonnati-ye irân râ kheyli dust dâram.

I really like traditional Iranian music. (neutral standard; attitude)

برای تکمیل ثبت‌نام به شماره‌ی گذرنامه نیاز داریم.

barâ-ye takmil-e sabt-nâm be shomâre-ye gozarnâme niyâz dârim.

We need the passport number to complete the registration. (formal-neutral; نیاز داشتن به)

این تصمیم برای همه‌ی اعضای گروه اهمیت دارد.

in tasmim barâ-ye hame-ye a'zâ-ye goruh ahammiyat dârad.

This decision matters to every member of the group. (formal-neutral; relevance)

💡
Many داشتن compounds translate with an English verb that contains no have: دوست داشتن “like,” خبر داشتن “know,” اهمیت داشتن “matter.” Translation cannot choose the Persian light verb for you.

Durativity and the absence of می‌ in many presents

Ordinary possessive داشتن uses دارم, not می‌دارم. Several highly frequent stative compounds follow the same present pattern: دوست دارم، نیاز دارم، حق دارم، خبر دارم. Their past forms are دوست داشتم، نیاز داشتم, and their negatives are دوست ندارم، نیاز ندارم.

Categoryدوست داشتننیاز داشتن
presentدوست دارمنیاز دارم
negative presentدوست ندارمنیاز ندارم
pastدوست داشتمنیاز داشتم
subjunctiveدوست داشته باشمنیاز داشته باشم

This is not a rule that every expression ending in داشتن rejects می‌. Established predicates such as نگه داشتن “keep/hold” have present نگه می‌دارم. Lexical identity matters more than a mechanical “stative compounds have no می‌” formula.

قبلا وقت بیشتری برای مطالعه داشتم.

qablan vaqt-e bishtari barâ-ye motâle'e dâshtam.

I used to have more time for studying. (neutral standard; past state)

امیدوارم فرصت داشته باشم دوباره به شیراز بروم.

omidvâram forsat dâshte bâsham dobâre be shirâz beravam.

I hope I have the chance to go to Shiraz again. (neutral standard; subjunctive state)

این دارو را دور از دسترس کودکان نگه می‌داریم.

in dâru râ dur az dastres-e kudakân negah mi-dârim.

We keep this medicine out of children's reach. (formal-neutral; نگه داشتن does take می‌)

There is no logical shortcut for every compound. Store the ordinary present alongside the infinitive, especially when the light verb is داشتن.

Experiencers and their objects

In دوست داشتن, the experiencer is the grammatical subject and the liked person or thing is the object: من این کتاب را دوست دارم. In a predicate such as درد داشتن, the person experiencing the symptom is again the subject, while the symptom is expressed as something they have.

پدرم بعد از عمل هنوز کمی درد دارد.

pedar-am ba'd az amal hanuz kami dard dârad.

My father still has a little pain after the operation. (neutral conversation; bodily experience)

من این محله را دوست دارم، چون همه‌چیز نزدیک است.

man in mahalle râ dust dâram, chun hame-chiz nazdik ast.

I like this neighborhood because everything is nearby. (neutral standard; experiencer subject)

English learners sometimes search for a Persian adjective equivalent to “I am interested” and miss the ordinary state predicate علاقه داشتن به. Persian also has علاقه‌مند بودن به (formal-neutral). These are lexical alternatives, not licenses to replace داشتن freely in every experience expression.

Contrast with کردن and شدن

داشتن presents a state; پیدا کردن or شدن often introduces entry into a state; کردن may bring that state about. Compare:

PredicateViewpointMeaning
علاقه داشتن به موضوعstatebe interested in the topic
به موضوع علاقه‌مند شدنchangebecome interested in the topic
موضوع را جالب کردنcausationmake the topic interesting

از کودکی به ستاره‌شناسی علاقه داشتم، اما در دانشگاه به زبان‌شناسی علاقه‌مند شدم.

az kudaki be setâre-shenâsi alâqe dâshtam, ammâ dar dâneshgâh be zabân-shenâsi alâqe-mand shodam.

I had been interested in astronomy since childhood, but at university I became interested in linguistics. (neutral standard; state versus change)

توضیح روشن معلم درس را برای ما جالب کرد.

towzih-e rowshan-e mo'allem dars râ barâ-ye mâ jâleb kard.

The teacher's clear explanation made the lesson interesting for us. (neutral standard; causation)

The distinction is aspectual and relational, not simply English have versus become. Choose the established whole expression that matches the intended viewpoint.

Complements are lexically selected

Different داشتن compounds take different frames: به چیزی نیاز داشتن, از چیزی خبر داشتن, با چیزی ارتباط داشتن, از کسی انتظار داشتن که..., برای کسی اهمیت داشتن. These prepositions are part of the entry.

از تغییر زمان پرواز خبر داشتید؟

az taghyir-e zamân-e parvâz khabar dâshtid?

Did you know about the change in the flight time? (polite neutral; خبر داشتن از)

این مشکل با نسخه‌ی جدید برنامه ارتباط دارد.

in moshkel bâ noskhe-ye jadid-e barnâme ertebât dârad.

This problem is related to the new version of the program. (formal-neutral; ارتباط داشتن با)

از شما انتظار داریم تا فردا پاسخ بدهید.

az shomâ entezâr dârim tâ fardâ pâsokh bedahid.

We expect you to respond by tomorrow. (formal-neutral; انتظار داشتن از)

💡
A preposition in a داشتن compound belongs to the whole predicate, not to داشتن by itself. A vocabulary note should say نیاز داشتن به, not merely نیاز داشتن.

Conversation and written standard

Tehran speech uses داره، دارن، داشتین (informal: Tehran) where standard writing has دارد، دارند، داشتید. The nonverbal partner generally remains recognizable. In a mixed setting, match the entire clause to one register.

— از برنامه‌ی فردا خبر داری؟ — نه، ولی به جوابش نیاز دارم.

— az barnâme-ye fardâ khabar dâri? — na, vali be javâb-ash niyâz dâram.

— Do you know about tomorrow's plan? — No, but I need the answer. (neutral conversation)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding می‌ to a stative present

❌ من این فیلم را خیلی می‌دوست دارم.

Incorrect — می‌ cannot attach to دوست; the ordinary present is دوست دارم.

✅ من پایان این فیلم را خیلی دوست دارم.

man pâyân-e in film râ kheyli dust dâram.

I really like the ending of this film.

2. Using داشتن for English “have breakfast”

⚠️ ساعت هفت صبحانه داریم.

sâ'at-e haft sobhâne dârim.

Grammatical when breakfast is available or scheduled at seven; it does not by itself mean ‘we eat breakfast at seven.’

✅ روزهای کاری ساعت هفت صبحانه می‌خوریم.

ruz-hâ-ye kâri sâ'at-e haft sobhâne mi-khorim.

On workdays we eat breakfast at seven.

3. Omitting a selected preposition

❌ برای این کار تجربه‌ی بیشتری نیاز داریم.

Incorrect — نیاز داشتن selects به before what is needed.

✅ برای این کار به تجربه‌ی بیشتری نیاز داریم.

barâ-ye in kâr be tajrobe-ye bishtari niyâz dârim.

We need more experience for this work.

4. Confusing a state with entry into it

❌ بعد از چند جلسه به موضوع علاقه داشتم شدم.

Incorrect — do not stack داشتن and شدن; use علاقه‌مند شدم for a change.

✅ بعد از چند جلسه به موضوع علاقه‌مند شدم.

ba'd az chand jalase be mowzu' alâqe-mand shodam.

After a few sessions, I became interested in the subject.

5. Assuming every داشتن compound omits می‌

❌ من همیشه یک نسخه‌ی پشتیبان نگه دارم.

Incorrect for a habitual indicative — نگه داشتن uses نگه می‌دارم here.

✅ من همیشه یک نسخه‌ی پشتیبان روی حافظه‌ی جدا نگه می‌دارم.

man hamishe yek noskhe-ye poshtibân ru-ye hâfeze-ye jodâ negah mi-dâram.

I always keep a backup copy on separate storage.

Key Takeaways

  • Compounds with داشتن commonly express durable attitudes, needs, rights, knowledge, and relations.
  • Many high-frequency stative presents use دارم/دارد without می‌, but نگه داشتن shows that this is lexical, not universal.
  • The experiencer is often the subject; the thing liked, needed, or experienced follows the compound's own frame.
  • داشتن profiles a state, while شدن often profiles entry into one and کردن may profile causation.
  • Memorize the selected preposition with the complete predicate.
