Persian can make an explicit present progressive with a finite form of داشتن “to have” followed by an ordinary می present: دارم کتاب میخوانم “I am reading a book.” The construction presents an event as visibly or immediately in progress, so it is narrower than the plain present کتاب میخوانم, which may mean “I read books,” “I am reading,” or—given future context—“I will read.”
English learners will recognize the progressive meaning but not the structure. Persian does not use a form of “be” plus a participle. Both Persian verbs are finite, and both normally agree with the same subject.
The two finite verbs
The first verb is present-tense داشتن without می; the second is the lexical verb in the regular present indicative. Compare the six-person frame:
| Person | Auxiliary | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | دارم | دارم مینویسم | I am writing |
| you (singular) | داری | داری مینویسی | you are writing |
| he/she/it | دارد | دارد مینویسد | he/she is writing |
| we | داریم | داریم مینویسیم | we are writing |
| you (plural/polite) | دارید | دارید مینویسید | you are writing |
| they | دارند | دارند مینویسند | they are writing |
دارم جواب ایمیلها را مینویسم.
dâram javâb-e imeyl-hâ râ mi-nevisam.
I'm writing the replies to the emails. (neutral spoken standard; activity underway now)
بچهها دارند در حیاط بازی میکنند.
bachche-hâ dârand dar hayât bâzi mi-konand.
The children are playing in the yard. (neutral spoken standard)
چرا چراغ را خاموش میکنی؟ دارم مطالعه میکنم.
cherâ cherâgh râ khâmush mi-koni? dâram motâle'e mi-konam.
Why are you turning off the light? I'm studying. (careful conversation)
The object, adverb, or nonverbal part of a compound verb can stand between the two finite verbs. In دارم شام درست میکنم, the progressive auxiliary scopes over the whole predicate شام درست کردن; it is not a literal possession verb meaning “I have.”
Why use it instead of the plain present?
The ordinary present indicative is already compatible with an event happening now. Adding داشتن blocks the habitual reading and directs attention to the event's internal, unfolding phase.
هر شب بعد از شام کتاب میخوانم.
har shab ba'd az shâm ketâb mi-khânam.
I read every night after dinner. (neutral standard; habitual plain present)
الان دارم همان کتاب را میخوانم.
alân dâram hamân ketâb râ mi-khânam.
Right now I'm reading that same book. (neutral spoken standard; explicit progressive)
The contrast is not always obligatory. If someone asks چه کار میکنی؟ “What are you doing?”, both غذا میپزم and دارم غذا میپزم can answer naturally. The second makes “in progress right now” more prominent. Persian therefore has a progressive construction, but it does not need to mark every English be + -ing form explicitly.
Events that are just beginning
With motion, arrival, change, and other events that have a natural endpoint, the construction often describes the preparatory phase immediately before the endpoint. دارم میرسم does not normally claim that “arriving” is a long activity; it means that the approach is underway and arrival is imminent.
پنج دقیقه صبر کن؛ دارم میرسم.
panj daqiqe sabr kon; dâram mi-rasam.
Wait five minutes; I'm almost there. (informal-neutral; imminent arrival)
هوا تاریک شده و دارد باران میآید.
havâ târik shode va dârad bârân mi-âyad.
It has grown dark, and rain is starting to fall. (careful spoken standard; onset underway)
This imminent or “incipient” reading follows from aspect, not from a separate future tense. The speaker locates the event's lead-up in the present. Compare that with the planned future use described on Present Indicative for Future Time.
Negation has a real restriction
Neutral داشتن progressives do not form by negating the auxiliary. ندارم مینویسم is not “I am not writing.” For the ordinary negative statement, Persian normally uses the negative plain present نمینویسم; context and الان supply the current-time reading.
الان کار نمیکنم؛ دارم استراحت میکنم.
alân kâr nemi-konam; dâram esterâhat mi-konam.
I'm not working right now; I'm resting. (neutral conversation)
صدایت را نمیشنوم؛ بلندتر حرف بزن.
sedâ-yat râ nemi-shenavam; boland-tar harf bezan.
I can't hear you; speak louder. (neutral conversation)
Forms such as دارم نمیخورم do occur with a deliberately contrastive meaning like “I am actively not eating / continuing to refrain from eating.” They are (informal, marked) and are not the routine negative counterpart of دارم میخورم. At A2, use الان نمیخورم for the neutral meaning.
Register and colloquial Tehran forms
The construction is grammatical in standard Persian, but it is especially frequent in conversation. Formal edited prose often uses the plain imperfective when the context already establishes simultaneity. In Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), third-person endings and some stems reduce: داره میاد، دارن صحبت میکنن، داری چی میگی؟
داری چی میگی؟ من که چیزی نفهمیدم.
dâri chi mi-gi? man ke chizi na-fahmidam.
What are you saying? I didn't understand a thing. (informal, regional: Tehran)
آسانسور داره میاد؛ یک لحظه صبر کن.
âsânsur dâre miyâd; yek lahze sabr kon.
The elevator is coming; wait a moment. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Do not mix these reductions unpredictably in careful writing. دارد میآید is the standard form; داره میاد is a coherent spoken form. Neither is more “logical”—they belong to different registers.
Common Mistakes
1. Letting the two verbs disagree
❌ ما داریم فیلم میبینند.
Incorrect — the auxiliary is first-person plural, but the lexical verb is third-person plural.
✅ ما داریم فیلم تازهی او را میبینیم.
mâ dârim film-e tâze-ye u râ mi-binim.
We're watching his new film.
2. Dropping می from the lexical verb
❌ دارم گزارش را نویسم.
Incorrect — the second verb must be an ordinary می present, not a bare present stem.
✅ دارم بخش آخر گزارش را مینویسم.
dâram bakhsh-e âkhar-e gozâresh râ mi-nevisam.
I'm writing the last section of the report.
3. Adding می to the auxiliary
❌ میدارم شام درست میکنم.
Incorrect — progressive داشتن appears as دارم، داری، دارد and so on, without می.
✅ دارم برای مهمانها شام درست میکنم.
dâram barâ-ye mehmân-hâ shâm dorost mi-konam.
I'm making dinner for the guests.
4. Negating داشتن for an ordinary negative progressive
❌ ندارم به موسیقی گوش میدهم.
Incorrect — progressive داشتن normally rejects auxiliary negation.
✅ الان به موسیقی گوش نمیدهم؛ دارم درس میخوانم.
alân be musiqi gush nemi-daham; dâram dars mi-khânam.
I'm not listening to music now; I'm studying.
Key Takeaways
- Match the finite form of داشتن and the می present to the same subject.
- Use the construction to foreground an event underway now or an endpoint that is imminent.
- The plain present can still translate an English progressive when context is sufficient.
- Neutral negation normally uses نمی + present stem, not a negated progressive auxiliary.
- The construction is especially common in speech; keep standard and Tehran colloquial forms internally consistent.
