Core Compounds with شدن

Compounds with شدن usually present a transition from the viewpoint of the person or thing that changes: هوا سرد شد “the weather got cold,” در باز شد “the door opened,” جلسه شروع شد “the meeting started.” That changing or affected participant is the grammatical subject.

English may use become, get, turn, an intransitive verb, or a passive form. Persian organizes many of these meanings around شدن, but the complete compound remains lexical. گم شدن means “get lost,” تمام شدن means “finish/run out,” and آماده شدن means “get ready.” Their meanings cannot be recovered from شدن alone.

The subject undergoes the change

The central construction is “changing element + شدن.” The light verb carries tense and agreement; the nonverbal element names the resulting state or conventional event.

بعد از غروب هوا خیلی سرد شد.

ba'd az ghorub havâ kheyli sard shod.

After sunset, the weather became very cold. (neutral standard; change of state)

در آسانسور بالاخره باز شد.

dar-e âsânsur bâlâkhare bâz shod.

The elevator door finally opened. (neutral standard; anticausative event)

اینترنت وسط جلسه قطع شد.

internet vasat-e jalase qat' shod.

The internet connection dropped in the middle of the meeting. (neutral conversation)

English allows “I opened” with no object in some contexts. Persian makes the participant structure explicit: در را باز کردم has an agent and object, while در باز شد makes در the subject that undergoes the change.

💡
With شدن, first identify what changes. That participant is normally the subject—even when English translates the Persian sentence with a passive expression.

The کردن / شدن pairing

Many result expressions form a productive-looking pair:

Agent causes a changeParticipant undergoes a changeContrast
اتاق را گرم کردناتاق گرم شدنwarm the room / the room gets warm
بچه را بیدار کردنبچه بیدار شدنwake the child / the child wakes up
برنامه را شروع کردنبرنامه شروع شدنstart the program / the program starts
فایل را منتشر کردنفایل منتشر شدنpublish the file / the file gets published

من بخاری را روشن کردم و اتاق کم‌کم گرم شد.

man bokhâri râ rowshan kardam va otâq kam-kam garm shod.

I turned on the heater, and the room gradually became warm. (neutral standard; cause followed by change)

صدای تلفن مرا بیدار کرد، ولی بچه‌ها بیدار نشدند.

sedâ-ye telefon marâ bidâr kard, vali bachche-hâ bidâr na-shodand.

The sound of the phone woke me, but the children did not wake up. (neutral standard; minimal causative/inchoative contrast)

This alternation profiles different participants; it does not merely swap two synonyms. The کردن clause can state the causer, whereas the شدن clause can omit any cause because no agent argument is required. Context may still make a cause obvious.

Not every compound forms a free pair. گم شدن “get lost/disappear” pairs with گم کردن for ordinary loss—کلیدم را گم کردم “I lost my key”—but English lose in defeat, bereavement, or missing transport requires other Persian predicates. تمام شدن pairs with تمام کردن, yet “run out of sugar” is normally شکر تمام شد, not an English-shaped object construction. Lexical convention still matters.

Inchoative, anticausative, and lexical event meanings

An inchoative marks entry into a state: خسته شدن “become tired.” An anticausative describes a change that could have a cause without expressing that cause: شیشه شکست is a simple verb “the glass broke,” while در باز شد uses a compound. A lexical event compound such as شروع شدن or تمام شدن packages an event boundary.

These labels describe overlapping perspectives rather than three rigid boxes. What matters for production is the subject role and the established whole predicate.

بعد از سه ساعت پیاده‌روی کاملا خسته شدیم.

ba'd az se sâ'at piyâde-ravi kâmelan khaste shodim.

After three hours of walking, we became completely tired. (neutral standard; inchoative)

جلسه ده دقیقه دیرتر شروع شد.

jalase dah daqiqe dirtar shoru' shod.

The meeting started ten minutes late. (neutral standard; event boundary)

وقتی رسیدیم، همه‌ی بلیت‌ها تمام شده بود.

vaqti residim, hame-ye belit-hâ tamâm shode bud.

When we arrived, all the tickets had sold out. (neutral standard; resulting unavailability)

Passive-like does not always mean passive

Because شدن places an affected participant in subject position, English often translates it with a passive: فایل پاک شد “the file was deleted.” Persian has genuine periphrastic passives when a past participle precedes شدن: نامه نوشته شد “the letter was written.” With many کردن predicates, however, the intransitive or passive-like partner instead replaces کردن with شدن: نامه را امضا کردند versus نامه امضا شد. Other cases are ordinary lexical changes of state: چراغ خاموش شد can mean “the light went out,” without asserting an agent.

گزارش نهایی دیروز در سایت منتشر شد.

gozâresh-e nahâyi diruz dar sâyt montasher shod.

The final report was published on the website yesterday. (formal-neutral; passive-like/result reading)

چراغ ورودی ناگهان خاموش شد.

cherâgh-e vorudi nâgahân khâmush shod.

The entrance light suddenly went out. (neutral; ordinary change, no agent implied)

Do not mechanically add an English by-phrase to every شدن compound. A deliberate agent is natural with genuine passives in formal contexts, but agentless formulation is one reason Persian selects the construction. The dedicated Passive with Participle + شدن page develops that system.

Agreement, tense, and register

The changing subject controls agreement. Animate plurals normally trigger plural agreement: بچه‌ها آماده شدند. Inanimate plurals often allow or favor a singular verb, although plural agreement is possible when the items or events are strongly individuated: برنامه‌ها شروع شد / شروع شدند. Negation and می‌ attach only to شدن: آماده نمی‌شوم. Standard present forms use می‌شوم، می‌شود، می‌شوند. Tehran speech commonly has می‌شم، میشه، میشن (informal: Tehran); do not mix those reduced forms with standard endings.

تا ده دقیقه‌ی دیگر آماده می‌شوم.

tâ dah daqiqe-ye digar âmâde mi-shavam.

I'll be ready in ten minutes. (neutral standard)

— چرا صدا قطع میشه؟ — اینترنت ضعیفه؛ الان بهتر میشه.

— cherâ sedâ qat' mishe? — internet za'ife; alân behtar mishe.

— Why does the sound keep cutting out? — The connection is weak; it'll get better now. (informal: Tehran)

💡
Colloquial میشه can represent “becomes,” “gets done,” or impersonal “it is possible.” Translate the complete predicate and identify its subject before choosing an English equivalent.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving شدن a direct object in a causative clause

❌ من چای را گرم شدم.

Incorrect — شدن makes the changing participant the subject; an agent warming tea needs گرم کردن.

✅ من چای را روی اجاق گرم کردم.

man chây râ ru-ye ojâq garm kardam.

I warmed the tea on the stove.

2. Making the agent agree with شدن

❌ تعمیرکار پنجره باز شد.

Incorrect for ‘the repairman opened the window’ — the causer requires پنجره را باز کرد.

✅ تعمیرکار پنجره را بدون صدا باز کرد.

ta'mirkâr panjare râ bedun-e sedâ bâz kard.

The repairman opened the window quietly.

3. Treating every شدن compound as a deliberate passive

❌ هوا به‌وسیله‌ی شب سرد شد.

Incorrect — سرد شدن here is an ordinary change of state, not a passive requiring a by-phrase.

✅ با تاریک شدن هوا، خیابان هم سرد شد.

bâ târik shodan-e havâ, khiyâbân ham sard shod.

As it grew dark, the street became cold too.

4. Using the wrong agreement

❌ بچه‌ها زود آماده شد.

Incorrect in neutral standard Persian — plural بچه‌ها requires شدند.

✅ بچه‌ها زودتر از ما آماده شدند.

bachche-hâ zudtar az mâ âmâde shodand.

The children got ready earlier than we did.

5. Mixing standard and Tehran forms

❌ شما چه ساعتی آماده میشه‌اید؟

Incorrect — میشه is already a complete third-person singular form and cannot take the ending ـاید.

✅ شما تا چه ساعتی آماده می‌شوید؟

shomâ tâ che sâ'ati âmâde mi-shavid?

By what time will you be ready? (polite standard)

Key Takeaways

  • شدن presents the affected or changing participant as subject.
  • X کردن / X شدن often contrasts caused change with undergoing change.
  • Inchoative, anticausative, lexical-event, and passive-like readings overlap; the whole predicate decides the interpretation.
  • Not every شدن clause is a true passive, and not every compound has a freely creatable کردن partner.
  • Standard and Tehran paradigms are both systematic but must not be mixed.
