A2 Path: Core Morphology

This path consolidates forms that make an A2 sentence precise: number inside the noun phrase, discourse-sensitive object marking, pronominal clitics, past versus perfect viewpoint, present subjunctive forms, adjective comparison, and basic clause linking. It teaches no new construction. Each stage points to an existing specialist page, defines a production goal, and returns earlier morphology in a review loop.

Complete the A1 exit task from Script to First Conversations before starting. You should already read familiar unpointed words, control the copula, build ezafe phrases, use neutral SOV order, and contrast a present routine with a simple-past event.

Stage ۱: Number belongs to the noun phrase

Review regular plural with ـها and nouns after numbers and quantifiers. English marks plural after every number above one; neutral Persian normally keeps the counted noun singular.

کتاب‌ها روی میز هستند، ولی دو کتاب برای من است.

ketâb-hâ ru-ye miz hastand, vali do ketâb barâ-ye man ast.

The books are on the table, but two books are for me.

چند دانشجو پرسش‌هایشان را فرستادند.

chand dâneshju porsesh-hâ-yeshân râ ferestâdand.

Several students sent their questions.

Production goal: describe one uncounted set with ـها, then quantities of ۲, ۵, and چند with a singular counted noun. Review loop: add an adjective through ezafe and check that it does not agree in number.

Stage ۲: Make object marking tell a discourse story

Use the position of direct objects and را. Do not memorize را as “the object suffix.” It commonly marks an identifiable or discourse-linked direct object. A useful A2 drill first introduces an object without را and then refers back to it with را.

دیروز یک کیف خریدم؛ امروز کیف را به خواهرم نشان دادم.

diruz yek kif kharidam; emruz kif râ be khâhar-am neshân dâdam.

Yesterday I bought a bag; today I showed the bag to my sister.

برای شام غذا می‌پزیم، اما آن دسر را از بیرون می‌خریم.

barâ-ye shâm ghazâ mi-pazim, ammâ ân deser râ az birun mi-kharim.

We are cooking food for dinner, but we are buying that dessert outside.

Production goal: tell a four-sentence object chain in which an item moves from new to identifiable. Review loop: replace the full noun with a clitic in Stage ۳ and check whether the referent remains clear.

💡
Number morphology answers “one or more?” Object marking answers “which discourse referent?” Keep those decisions separate.

Stage ۳: Attach clitics to a usable host

Study possessive clitics on nouns before object clitics on verbs. The same six pronominal shapes can express a possessor on a noun or an object on a verbal host; syntax and attachment site identify the role.

کلیدم را پیدا کردم و گذاشتمش کنار در.

kelid-am râ peydâ kardam va gozâshtam-ash kenâr-e dar.

I found my key and put it beside the door.

شماره‌ات را ندارم؛ دوباره برایم بفرستش.

shomâre-at râ nadâram; do-bâre barâ-yam beferest-ash.

I don't have your number; send it to me again. (informal singular)

Production goal: produce three possessive and three object clitics with an unmistakable antecedent. Do not force a clitic merely to sound colloquial; use a full pronoun where contrast is needed.

Stage ۴: Choose the past viewpoint

Review present perfect formation, present perfect uses, and the decision guide Simple Past or Present Perfect?. The simple past advances a bounded narrative. The present perfect presents a prior event as relevant now, experiential, or inside a still-open frame.

ساعت هشت رسیدیم و مستقیم وارد سالن شدیم.

sâ'at-e hasht residim va mostaqim vâred-e sâlon shodim.

We arrived at eight and went straight into the hall.

هنوز وارد سالن نشده‌ایم؛ جلوی در منتظریم.

hanuz vâred-e sâlon nashode-im; jelo-ye dar montazer-im.

We still haven't entered the hall; we're waiting by the door.

Production goal: narrate three consecutive past events, then give two present-relevant updates. Review loop: underline the time expression and explain why the chosen viewpoint fits it.

Stage ۵: Form a controlled subjunctive complement

Study present subjunctive formation and its negative. At this stage, practice after already taught frames of desire, necessity, and recommendation. Learn irregular present stems with the verb; there is no reliable rule that derives every stem from the infinitive.

می‌خواهم فردا زودتر حرکت کنیم.

mi-khâham fardâ zud-tar harekat konim.

I want us to leave earlier tomorrow.

بهتر است این خبر را تا عصر منتشر نکنید.

behtar ast in khabar râ tâ asr montasher nakonid.

It is better not to publish this news until the evening. (polite/plural)

Production goal: make two affirmative and two negative complements with different subjects. Review loop: contrast each with an independent factual present clause.

Stage ۶: Compare on one scale

Use basic comparative with ـتر and superlative with ـترین. State the comparison set or standard where the context does not supply it.

قطار از اتوبوس سریع‌تر است، ولی بلیت آن گران‌تر است.

qetâr az otobus sari'-tar ast, vali belit-e ân gerân-tar ast.

The train is faster than the bus, but its ticket is more expensive.

این آرام‌ترین اتاق هتل است.

in ârâm-tarin otâq-e hotel ast.

This is the quietest room in the hotel.

Production goal: compare three options on price, speed, and comfort, then choose one and justify it.

Stage ۷: Join clauses without losing their roles

Consolidate coordination with و, complementizer که, and basic relative clauses. First combine clauses you can already produce independently.

می‌دانم که جلسه دیر شروع می‌شود، ولی سر وقت می‌رسم.

mi-dânam ke jalase dir shoru' mi-shavad, vali sar-e vaqt mi-resam.

I know the meeting will start late, but I'll arrive on time.

کتابی که پیشنهاد کردی از نسخه‌ی قبلی روشن‌تر است.

ketâbi ke pishnehâd kardi az noskhe-ye qabli rowshan-tar ast.

The book you recommended is clearer than the previous version.

Review loop: reduce each complex sentence back to its two short source clauses. If a pronoun or clitic has no clear referent, repair that before adding another connector.

Common Mistakes

Pluralizing after a numeral

❌ برای جلسه‌ی فردا سه کتاب‌ها کنار گذاشتم.

Incorrect: the counted noun is normally singular after a cardinal numeral.

✅ برای جلسه‌ی فردا سه کتاب کنار گذاشتم.

barâ-ye jalase-ye fardâ se ketâb kenâr gozâshtam.

I set three books aside for tomorrow's meeting.

Adding را to every direct object

❌ هر شب یک فیلم را می‌بینم.

Wrong for the intended nonspecific routine 'a film': را makes the object identifiable/specific.

✅ هر شب یک فیلم می‌بینم.

har shab yek film mi-binam.

I watch a film every night.

Using the perfect as English “have + participle” mechanically

❌ ساعت نه رسیده‌ام و بعد شام خورده‌ام.

Incorrect for a closed sequence of narrative events: the simple past is required here.

✅ ساعت نه رسیدم و بعد شام خوردم.

sâ'at-e noh residam va ba'd shâm khordam.

I arrived at nine and then ate dinner.

Keeping an indicative after a desire

❌ می‌خواهم فردا می‌آیی.

Incorrect: the desired action belongs in a subjunctive complement.

✅ می‌خواهم فردا بیایی.

mi-khâham fardâ biyâyi.

I want you to come tomorrow.

Diagnostic exit task

Write and record an eight-sentence account of choosing a course or trip. Include:

  • one counted noun and one plural set;
  • a newly introduced object followed by a را-marked reference;
  • one possessive and one object clitic;
  • two simple-past events and one present-perfect update;
  • one negative subjunctive complement;
  • one comparative and one که clause.

Pass when every ending has a recoverable subject, each clitic a clear antecedent, noun number fits its quantifier, and the past/perfect choices match the discourse. If two errors cluster in one stage, repeat its production goal with new vocabulary before continuing.

Key Takeaways

Treat morphology as meaningful choices inside discourse: number, identifiability, reference, viewpoint, modality, degree, and clause relation. Diagnose the choice that failed, then repeat it with fresh vocabulary.
