Persian forms a superlative by adding ـترین -tarin to a scalar adjective: بزرگترین bozorg-tarin “biggest,” سریعترین sari'-tarin “fastest.” Its most important syntactic difference from the ordinary adjective is position: a superlative normally stands before the noun, with no ezafe between them. Persian can also express a predicative “the most” meaning as از همه + comparative, literally “more than all.”
Form and default position
| Function | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ordinary attributive adjective | noun + ezafe + adjective | ساختمان بلند |
| comparative attributive adjective | noun + ezafe + adjectiveـتر | ساختمان بلندتر |
| superlative attributive adjective | adjectiveـترین + noun | بلندترین ساختمان |
| predicative alternative | X + از همه + adjectiveـتر + copula | این از همه بلندتر است |
The prenominal position is the neutral, productive pattern, not literary inversion. Compare ساختمان بلند “tall building,” where ezafe follows the noun, with بلندترین ساختمان “the tallest building,” where بلندترین directly precedes the noun.
این بلندترین ساختمان محله است.
in boland-tarin sâkhtemân-e mahalle ast.
This is the tallest building in the neighborhood. (neutral standard)
کوتاهترین مسیر را روی نقشه نشانم بده.
kutâh-tarin masir râ ru-ye naqshe neshân-am bede.
Show me the shortest route on the map. (careful spoken standard)
In the second sentence, را follows the complete object کوتاهترین مسیر. The superlative helps identify a unique candidate in the relevant set, but it is not itself an article.
Spelling ـترین
Like comparative ـتر, productive ـترین takes standard ZWNJ attachment after a joining letter: مهمترین، دقیقترین، آرامترین. After a nonjoining letter, as in زیباترین, the script is already visually disconnected.
مهمترین نکته را آخر جلسه تکرار میکنم.
mohem-tarin nokte râ âkhar-e jalse tekrâr mi-konam.
I'll repeat the most important point at the end of the meeting. (neutral standard)
این دقیقترین برآورد فعلی ماست.
in daqiq-tarin barâvard-e fe'li-ye mâst.
This is our most accurate current estimate. (formal)
The suffix creates degree meaning; it does not agree with the noun. مهمترین نکته and مهمترین نکتهها contain exactly the same superlative form.
The comparison set
A superlative is meaningful only relative to a set: the cheapest among which options, or the oldest in which family? Persian often leaves an obvious set implicit, or expresses it in a following modifier or a prepositional phrase.
سارا جوانترین عضو گروه است.
Sârâ javân-tarin ozv-e goruh ast.
Sara is the youngest member of the group. (neutral standard)
ارزانترین گزینه در این فهرست هزینهی حمل ندارد.
arzân-tarin gozine dar in fehrest hazine-ye haml nadârad.
The cheapest option on this list has no shipping charge. (neutral standard)
In جوانترین عضو گروه, ezafe connects عضو to گروه; there is still no ezafe between جوانترین and عضو. The phrase after the noun defines the comparison set.
More than one item can share the top region of a scale. Persian then commonly uses a partitive:
این رمان یکی از پرفروشترین کتابهای سال بود.
in român yeki az porforush-tarin ketâb-hâ-ye sâl bud.
This novel was one of the year's best-selling books. (neutral standard)
English one of the best books and Persian یکی از بهترین کتابها both avoid claiming a single unique winner. The plural noun after از supplies the larger set.
Predicative از همه ... ـتر
In a predicate, Iranian Persian very naturally uses از همه + comparative: این اتاق از همه روشنتر است “This room is the brightest.” The logic is transparent: it is brighter than every other relevant member.
این اتاق از همه روشنتر است.
in otâq az hame rowshan-tar ast.
This room is the brightest of all. (neutral standard)
کدام پیشنهاد از همه عملیتر بود؟
kodâm pishnehâd az hame amali-tar bud?
Which proposal was the most practical? (careful spoken standard)
This is the principal postnominal/predicative alternative to a prenominal ـترین phrase. Do not mechanically combine both strategies in edited standard prose. Choose عملیترین پیشنهاد or پیشنهادی که از همه عملیتر است.
A bare superlative can also be predicative when its noun is recoverable: این ارزانترین است “This is the cheapest one.” This is ellipsis, not ordinary postnominal adjective order.
از بین این سه مدل، این یکی سبکترین است.
az beyn-e in se model, in yeki sabok-tarin ast.
Of these three models, this one is the lightest. (neutral standard; the head noun is recoverable)
Definiteness without an article
English normally places the before a superlative. Persian has no comparable definite article. A phrase such as بهترین راه is typically identifiable because the superlative and context pick out the top member; a demonstrative, possessor, or را can add further discourse cues.
بهترین راه را پیدا کردیم، اما ارزانترین راه نبود.
behtarin râh râ peydâ kardim, ammâ arzân-tarin râh nabud.
We found the best way, but it wasn't the cheapest way. (neutral standard)
The first را marks the complete specific direct object. Nothing is missing before بهترین. The page on specificity across یک، ـی، and را explains why English definiteness cannot be mapped to one Persian slot.
Scope in longer noun phrases
The superlative combines first with the noun immediately following it. Later ezafe dependents then restrict that head: قدیمیترین پل شهر means “the city's oldest bridge,” with شهر delimiting the bridges compared. Word order and context decide the set.
قدیمیترین پل شهر برای تعمیر بسته شده است.
qadimi-tarin pol-e shahr barâ-ye ta'mir baste shode ast.
The city's oldest bridge has been closed for repairs. (news/formal)
If two comparison sets are plausible, name the intended set with در میان “among,” در “in,” or a relative clause. Superlatives are not structurally vague, but their comparison class is often supplied by discourse.
A short dialogue
نزدیکترین ایستگاه مترو کجاست؟
nazdik-tarin istgâh-e metro kojâst?
Where is the nearest metro station? (careful spoken standard)
ایستگاه میدان از همه نزدیکتر است؛ ده دقیقه پیاده راه است.
istgâh-e meydân az hame nazdik-tar ast; dah daqiqe piyâde râh ast.
Meydan Station is the nearest; it's a ten-minute walk. (careful spoken standard)
The question uses a prenominal superlative; the answer uses the predicative comparative alternative.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping ordinary postnominal adjective order
❌ ساختمان بلندترین شهر را دیدیم.
Incorrect neutral attributive order — ـترین normally precedes the noun.
✅ بلندترین ساختمان شهر را دیدیم.
boland-tarin sâkhtemân-e shahr râ didim.
We saw the tallest building in the city.
2. Inserting ezafe between ـترین and its noun
❌ بلندترینی برج شهر را دیدیم.
Incorrect — do not add an ezafe-like ی between attributive بلندترین and برج.
✅ بلندترین برج شهر را دیدیم.
boland-tarin borj-e shahr râ didim.
We saw the tallest tower in the city.
3. Separating the productive suffix
❌ مهم ترین نکته را فراموش کردم.
Incorrect standard spacing — write the suffix with a ZWNJ.
✅ مهمترین نکته را فراموش کردم.
mohem-tarin nokte râ farâmush kardam.
I forgot the most important point.
4. Blending both superlative strategies
❌ اتاق شمالی از همه روشنترین است.
Nonstandard blend in edited prose — use either ـترین or از همه ... ـتر.
✅ اتاق شمالی از همه روشنتر است.
otâq-e shomâli az hame rowshan-tar ast.
The north room is the brightest of all.
Key Takeaways
- Add ـترین with standard ZWNJ where applicable: مهمترین.
- The default attributive order is superlative + noun, without ezafe between them.
- Context or a following modifier supplies the comparison set.
- Predicative از همه + adjectiveـتر is a natural alternative to an attributive superlative.
- Persian has no definite article before a superlative; uniqueness, context, and را distribute reference marking.
