Irregular بهتر and بیشتر

Two of the most frequent Persian comparison words are lexicalized rather than transparent applications of productive ـتر. بهتر behtar is the normal comparative associated with خوب “good,” and بیشتر bishtar means “more” in quantity, extent, or frequency. Their superlatives are بهترین behtarin “best” and بیشترین bishtarin “most/greatest.” Learn all four as whole spellings: they contain no ZWNJ.

English has the suppletive series good–better–best. Persian is similar enough to be memorable, but the systems do not align perfectly: regular خوب‌تر exists in limited compositional uses, while بهتر is overwhelmingly the unmarked choice. Quantity بیشتر also has syntactic readings that English distributes among more, most, mostly, and longer.

The four core forms

Meaning domainBasic expressionComparativeSuperlative
qualityخوب “good”بهتر “better”بهترین “best”
quantity/extentزیاد “much, many, a lot”بیشتر “more”بیشترین “most/greatest”

Historically and lexically, these forms are established words. Do not respell them as separable suffix combinations such as به‌تر or بیش‌تر. Productive spelling rules for بزرگ‌تر do not override the conventional whole-word spellings بهتر and بیشتر.

بهتر: the normal word for “better”

بهتر can be predicative, attributive, or adverbial in a manner expression. Its comparison standard takes از, exactly like a regular comparative.

این راه‌حل از پیشنهاد قبلی بهتر است.

in râh-hal az pishnehâd-e qabli behtar ast.

This solution is better than the previous proposal. (neutral standard)

برای جلسه اتاق بهتری پیدا کردم.

barâ-ye jalse otâq-e behtari peydâ kardam.

I found a better room for the meeting. (neutral standard)

In اتاق بهتری, ezafe links the noun to the comparative, and final ـی makes the noun phrase indefinite: “a better room.” The ـی is not part of the lexical comparative بهتر.

اگر متن را کوتاه‌تر کنی، بهتر خوانده می‌شود.

agar matn râ kutâh-tar koni, behtar khânde mi-shavad.

If you shorten the text, it will read better. (careful standard)

Here بهتر modifies how the text is read, not a following noun. The form itself stays the same; syntax supplies the function.

Is خوب‌تر wrong?

No. خوب‌تر is a possible regular formation, especially when a speaker deliberately treats خوب as one point on a scale or echoes the word خوب. But بهتر is the neutral high-frequency comparative in ordinary judgments, recommendations, and improvement. A learner who always chooses بهتر for English better will usually sound natural.

این نسخه خوب است، اما با یک مثال دیگر خوب‌تر هم می‌شود.

in noskhe khub ast, ammâ bâ yek mesâl-e digar khub-tar ham mi-shavad.

This version is good, but one more example could make it even better. (marked compositional repetition)

This is a real alternative, not a form to practice as the default. There is no completely logical rule predicting every speaker's preference; frequency and discourse wording matter.

💡
Memorize بهتر as the default comparative lexeme. Recognize خوب‌تر as grammatical when “more good” is built compositionally, but do not replace routine بهتر with it mechanically.

بهترین: “best” before a noun

بهترین follows the superlative pattern by standing before its noun without ezafe: بهترین گزینه “the best option.” It can also stand alone when the omitted noun is recoverable.

بهترین زمان برای تماس بعد از ساعت شش است.

behtarin zamân barâ-ye tamâs ba'd az sâ'at-e shesh ast.

The best time to call is after six o'clock. (neutral standard)

هر سه طرح خوب بود، ولی طرح دوم بهترین بود.

har se tarh khub bud, vali tarh-e dovvom behtarin bud.

All three designs were good, but the second was the best. (neutral standard; noun recoverable)

Do not add another comparative or superlative suffix: بهترتر and بهترین‌تر double-mark degree. The lexical word already contains the relevant comparison meaning.

بیشتر: more quantity, extent, or frequency

بیشتر can quantify a noun or modify an event. A particularly useful indefinite noun-phrase pattern is noun + ezafe + بیشتری: وقت بیشتری “more time,” دانشجوهای بیشتری “more students.” Mass nouns stay singular; ordinary count nouns are plural.

برای بررسی پرونده وقت بیشتری لازم داریم.

barâ-ye barrasi-ye parvande vaqt-e bishtari lâzem dârim.

We need more time to review the file. (neutral standard)

امسال دانشجوهای بیشتری در کارگاه شرکت کردند.

emsâl dâneshju-hâ-ye bishtari dar kârgâh sherkat kardand.

More students took part in the workshop this year. (neutral standard)

As an adverb, بیشتر compares extent or frequency. The standard can again appear with از.

از وقتی دورکار شده‌ام، بیشتر ورزش می‌کنم.

az vaqti durkâr shode-am, bishtar varzesh mi-konam.

Since I started working remotely, I exercise more. (neutral standard)

این تعمیر بیشتر از دو روز طول نمی‌کشد.

in ta'mir bishtar az do ruz tul nemi-keshad.

This repair won't take more than two days. (neutral standard)

The sequence بیشتر از before a measure means “more than.” Arithmetic and numeral syntax are separate topics; the comparison word itself remains unchanged.

بیشتر before a noun can mean “most,” not “more”

Word order creates an important contrast. دانشجوهای بیشتری introduces a larger number of students: “more students.” بیشتر دانشجوها normally selects the majority of a known or relevant group: “most students.” English uses two different words, while Persian uses position and noun-phrase structure.

بیشتر دانشجوها تکلیف را به‌موقع فرستادند.

bishtar-e dâneshju-hâ taklif râ be-mowqe' ferestâdand.

Most of the students submitted the assignment on time. (neutral standard)

In careful pronunciation, بیشترِ دانشجوها has ezafe-like linking in this majority construction. Compare this with postnominal دانشجوهای بیشتری above. For explicit “most of” subsets, speakers also use بیشترِ دانشجوها or بیشترِ آن‌ها, while partitives with از covers selectors that require از.

بیشترین: the greatest amount or number

بیشترین normally precedes a quantity-bearing noun: بیشترین زمان “the most time,” بیشترین رأی “the most votes,” بیشترین تعداد شرکت‌کننده “the greatest number of participants.” It identifies the maximum on a quantity scale, not the best quality.

این گزینه بیشترین هزینه را دارد، نه بهترین کیفیت را.

in gozine bishtarin hazine râ dârad, na behtarin keyfiyyat râ.

This option has the highest cost, not the best quality. (neutral standard)

نامزد سوم بیشترین رأی را به دست آورد.

nâmzad-e sevvom bishtarin ra'y râ be dast âvard.

The third candidate received the most votes. (news/formal)

💡
Keep quality and quantity separate: بهترین answers “which is best?”, while بیشترین answers “which has the greatest amount or number?”

A short dialogue

برای سفر کدام قطار بهتر است؟

barâ-ye safar kodâm qetâr behtar ast?

Which train is better for the trip? (careful spoken standard)

قطار صبح بهتر است؛ هم ارزان‌تر است، هم وقت بیشتری در شیراز داریم.

qetâr-e sobh behtar ast; ham arzân-tar ast, ham vaqt-e bishtari dar Shirâz dârim.

The morning train is better: it's cheaper, and we'll have more time in Shiraz. (careful spoken standard)

Common Mistakes

1. Applying productive ZWNJ spelling inside a lexicalized word

❌ این روش به‌تر است.

Incorrect spelling — بهتر is a lexicalized whole word.

✅ این روش بهتر است.

in ravesh behtar ast.

This method is better.

2. Adding a second comparative suffix

❌ امروز حالم بهترتر است.

Incorrect — بهتر already has comparative meaning.

✅ امروز حالم بهتر است.

emruz hâl-am behtar ast.

I feel better today.

3. Using prenominal بیشتر for intended “more students”

❌ امسال بیشتر دانشجوها ثبت‌نام کردند.

more students enrolled this year

Wrong structure for the intended meaning — this naturally means ‘most students.’

✅ امسال دانشجوهای بیشتری ثبت‌نام کردند.

emsâl dâneshju-hâ-ye bishtari sabt-e nâm kardand.

More students enrolled this year.

4. Putting بهترین after its noun as an attributive adjective

❌ راه بهترین را انتخاب کردیم.

Incorrect neutral order — superlative بهترین precedes the noun.

✅ بهترین راه را انتخاب کردیم.

behtarin râh râ entekhâb kardim.

We chose the best way.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn the whole spellings بهتر، بهترین، بیشتر، بیشترین without ZWNJ.
