English forces a choice between many with count nouns and much with mass nouns. Persian does not divide the system at the same point. زیاد ziyâd works with both kinds of noun and also modifies verbs; خیلی kheyli is the ordinary degree word “very/a lot” and can quantify in common speech; بسیاری besyâri presents “many” members, especially in formal prose. The challenge is therefore not translating many and much separately, but seeing what syntactic job the Persian word is doing.
A construction map
| Pattern | Typical meaning | Register and restriction |
|---|---|---|
| noun + ezafe + زیادی | much/many; a large quantity | neutral standard; mass noun singular, count noun normally plural |
| خیلی + noun | a lot of/many | very common in speech; also accepted in ordinary writing |
| زیاد or خیلی + verb/adjective | a lot, often; very | adverbial, not part of the noun phrase |
| بسیاری از + delimited set | many of | formal and written-standard |
| بسیاری + plural noun | many … | formal; human and abstract plurals are especially natural |
These patterns do not merely offer stylistic synonyms. In وقت زیادی, زیادی belongs inside the noun phrase and describes the amount of time. In زیاد کار کردن, زیاد modifies the event: someone works a lot or often.
زیادی after a noun: the neutral quantity pattern
The most productive neutral pattern is a noun followed through ezafe by زیادی. The final ـی is not the English indefinite article. It makes the adjective an indefinite quantity expression, roughly “a large amount/number.” A mass noun remains singular; an ordinary count noun is normally plural.
برای این کار وقت زیادی نداریم.
barâ-ye in kâr vaqt-e ziyâdi nadârim.
We don't have much time for this job.
آدمهای زیادی برای مصاحبه آمده بودند.
âdam-hâ-ye ziyâdi barâ-ye mosâhebe âmade budand.
A lot of people had come for the interview.
In the second sentence, آدمهای زیادی introduces an indefinite group. Persian has no slot where an English a or the must be inserted. Plural ـها, indefinite ـی, demonstratives, context, and—for specific objects—را distribute the work that English articles do.
امسال باران زیادی بارید.
emsâl bârân-e ziyâdi bârid.
It rained a lot this year.
Here باران is a mass noun and stays singular. A count noun normally takes plural marking: پیشنهادهای زیادی “many suggestions,” not a bare singular noun modeled on numeral syntax. Numerals and چند select singular count nouns, but زیادی does not share that rule.
زیاد as an adverb
When زیاد comes before a verb or at the end of its normal preverbal field, it measures frequency, duration, or extent of the event. It has no indefinite ـی because it is not an adjective inside a noun phrase.
این هفته زیاد کار کردهام.
in hafte ziyâd kâr karde-am.
I've worked a lot this week.
شبها زیاد قهوه نخور؛ خوابت نمیبرد.
shab-hâ ziyâd qahve nakhor; khâb-at nemi-barad.
Don't drink too much coffee at night; you won't get to sleep.
Compare the two functions directly:
کارهای زیادی دارم.
kâr-hâ-ye ziyâdi dâram.
I have a lot of tasks.
این روزها زیاد کار میکنم.
in ruz-hâ ziyâd kâr mi-konam.
These days I work a lot.
The first زیاد is part of کارهای زیادی; the second modifies کار میکنم. English happens to use “a lot” for both, which can hide this structural difference.
خیلی: quantity, degree, and everyday frequency
خیلی is first of all a degree adverb: خیلی خوب “very good,” خیلی دیر “very late.” It also means “a lot” with verbs and can precede nouns in everyday Iranian Persian. That broad usefulness makes it extremely frequent in conversation, but it does not make every occurrence a noun quantifier.
بعد از سفر خیلی خسته بودم.
ba'd az safar kheyli khaste budam.
I was very tired after the trip.
امروز خیلی کار دارم؛ عصر تماس میگیرم.
emruz kheyli kâr dâram; asr tamâs mi-giram.
I have a lot of work today; I'll call this evening.
در سفر خیلی عکس گرفتیم.
dar safar kheyli aks gereftim.
We took lots of photos on the trip.
خیلی عکس is natural in conversation even though عکس is morphologically singular. This is a genuine construction difference, not permission to remove plural marking everywhere: the postnominal pattern remains عکسهای زیادی. In careful expository prose, that latter form is often clearer.
With از, خیلی selects a subset of a known group:
خیلی از همکارهایم دورکار شدهاند.
kheyli az hamkâr-hâ-yam durkâr shode-and.
Many of my colleagues have started working remotely.
This partitive use is neutral in speech. The partitives with از page explains why the phrase after از is normally a contextually identifiable whole.
بسیاری: formal “many”
بسیاری is productive in formal writing, news, reports, and academic prose. Before a plural noun, it means “many”; before از, it means “many of.” It sounds elevated in spontaneous friendly conversation, where خیلی or آدمهای زیادی is more usual.
بسیاری از پژوهشگران این نتیجه را تأیید کردهاند.
besyâri az pazhuheshgarân in natije râ ta'yid karde-and.
Many researchers have confirmed this result. (formal)
بسیاری کشورها با کمبود آب روبهرو هستند.
besyâri keshvar-hâ bâ kambud-e âb rube-ru hastand.
Many countries face water shortages. (formal)
Do not normally put بسیاری directly before a mass noun. Formal Persian uses مقدار زیادی آب “a large amount of water,” not بسیاری آب. This lexical restriction has to be learned; it follows from بسیاری profiling multiple members rather than an undivided substance.
Agreement follows the quantified referent
Persian quantifiers themselves do not agree. The verb responds to the head noun and to animacy/register. A plural human group normally triggers plural agreement. In formal prose, an inanimate plural often takes a singular verb, although plural agreement is possible when the items are strongly individuated.
بسیاری از پروندهها هنوز بررسی نشده است.
besyâri az parvande-hâ hanuz barrasi nashode ast.
Many of the files have not yet been reviewed. (formal; inanimate singular agreement)
The singular است is licensed by the inanimate plural referent in formal style; it is not agreement with the word بسیاری. With people, use a plural verb: پژوهشگران ... کردهاند. See inanimate plurals and singular verb agreement for the broader pattern.
In conversation
This short exchange is ordinary standard speech, with the high-frequency adverbial and noun-phrase patterns side by side:
امروز خیلی سرت شلوغ است؟
emruz kheyli sar-at sholugh ast?
Are you very busy today?
بله، جلسههای زیادی دارم و باید زیاد حرف بزنم.
bale, jalse-hâ-ye ziyâdi dâram va bâyad ziyâd harf bezanam.
Yes, I have lots of meetings and I have to talk a lot.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying the English much/many split into two Persian quantifiers
❌ بسیاری آب نوشیدیم.
Incorrect — بسیاری normally counts members, not an undivided mass.
✅ مقدار زیادی آب نوشیدیم.
meqdâr-e ziyâdi âb nushidim.
We drank a large amount of water.
2. Using a singular count noun in the postnominal زیادی pattern
❌ پیشنهاد زیادی دریافت کردیم.
Incorrect for the intended reading 'many suggestions' — this count noun should be plural.
✅ پیشنهادهای زیادی دریافت کردیم.
pishnehâd-hâ-ye ziyâdi daryâft kardim.
We received many suggestions.
3. Adding the indefinite marker to adverbial زیاد
❌ این روزها زیادی کار میکنم.
Incorrect for neutral 'I work a lot'; زیادی here suggests 'too much,' not merely a large amount.
✅ این هفته زیاد کار میکنم.
in hafte ziyâd kâr mi-konam.
I am working a lot this week.
4. Putting را inside a quantified specific object
❌ بسیاری از این مقالهها را من خواندهام را.
Incorrect — را follows the complete object phrase once.
✅ بسیاری از این مقالهها را من خواندهام.
besyâri az in maqâle-hâ râ man khânde-am.
I have read many of these articles.
Key Takeaways
- noun + زیادی is the neutral “much/many” pattern: mass nouns singular, ordinary count nouns plural.
- Bare زیاد modifies events; خیلی modifies degree and is also a common conversational quantifier.
- بسیاری is formal and member-oriented; use بسیاری از for a subset of an identified whole.
- Verb agreement follows the referent's number and animacy, not the visible quantifier.
