In a Persian complex predicate, the nonverbal element and light verb jointly describe an event. Compare در باز شد “the door opened” with نگهبان در را باز کرد “the guard opened the door.” باز supplies the resulting state; شدن presents a transition undergone by the subject, while کردن adds a cause and a direct object.
This division of labor is real but not mechanically uniform. Linguists disagree about how much event structure comes from the light verb and how much comes from the nonverbal element. Observable usage supports an interaction: light-verb choice strongly affects valency and causation, while telicity and lexical aspect depend on the complete predicate, its object, quantification, and context.
Six dimensions, not one translation
| Dimension | Question | Persian diagnostic |
|---|---|---|
| causation | Does something bring about the event? | کردن / دادن often introduces a cause |
| change of state | Does a participant enter a result? | شدن often profiles the transition |
| agentivity | Is the cause intentional? | animate subject and adverbs such as عمدا; not guaranteed by کردن |
| telicity | Does the event have an inherent endpoint? | compatibility with “in X time” and completion entailments |
| dynamicity | Is there an unfolding process rather than a state? | progressive and duration expressions |
| lexical selection | Does Persian actually store this combination? | attested compound, not analogy alone |
باد شدید پنجره را باز کرد و اتاق سرد شد.
bâd-e shadid panjare râ bâz kard va otâq sard shod.
The strong wind opened the window, and the room became cold. (neutral standard; nonagentive cause plus change of state)
The wind is a cause but not an intentional agent. کردن therefore does not itself mean “act deliberately.” Event structure separates causation from agency.
Causative کردن and inchoative شدن
The productive-looking کردن / شدن contrast is clearest with adjectives and result expressions:
مسئول سالن چراغها را خاموش کرد.
mas'ul-e sâlon cherâgh-hâ râ khâmush kard.
The hall attendant turned off the lights. (neutral; caused result)
چراغها درست وسط سخنرانی خاموش شدند.
cherâgh-hâ dorost vasat-e sokhanrâni khâmush shodand.
The lights went out right in the middle of the talk. (neutral; change without an expressed causer)
این توضیح کوتاه موضوع را برای همه روشن کرد.
in towzih-e kutâh mowzu' râ barâ-ye hame rowshan kard.
This brief explanation clarified the issue for everyone. (formal-neutral; abstract cause)
بعد از دیدن نمودار، موضوع برایم روشن شد.
ba'd az didan-e nemudâr, mowzu' barâ-yam rowshan shod.
After seeing the chart, the issue became clear to me. (neutral; experiencer-oriented change)
With کردن, the affected participant takes را; with شدن, it is the agreeing subject. This is a valency alternation, not merely active versus passive. چراغها خاموش شدند can describe spontaneous failure without asserting that anybody turned them off.
The pattern has lexical gaps. Persian normally pairs تغییر دادن “change something” with تغییر کردن “change,” not a freely generated تغییر شدن for every intransitive context. The established predicate outranks the broad template.
Telicity emerges from the whole predicate
A telic event has a built-in endpoint; an atelic one can continue without reaching a prescribed finish. English often hides this distinction under a single verb. Persian light verbs contribute aspectual tendencies, but the nonverbal element and object can change the final classification.
تصمیم گرفتن normally culminates when a decision is reached, whereas قدم زدن describes an activity with no inherent destination.
پس از یک ساعت بحث، هیئت سرانجام تصمیم گرفت.
pas az yek sâ'at bahs, hey'at saranjâm tasmim gereft.
After an hour of discussion, the board finally made a decision. (formal-neutral; culminated event)
تا وقت شام کنار رودخانه قدم زدیم.
tâ vaqt-e shâm kenâr-e rudkhâne qadam zadim.
We walked along the river until dinner time. (neutral; activity bounded only by an external time)
The light verb زدن does not make every compound punctual: قدم زدن is durative, while یک ضربه زدن is a bounded single event. The noun and its quantification matter.
در زد و منتظر ماند.
dar zad va montazer mând.
She knocked and waited. (neutral; one contextually bounded knock or knocking event)
چند دقیقه پشت سر هم در میزد، اما کسی جواب نمیداد.
chand daqiqe posht-e sar-e ham dar mi-zad, ammâ kasi javâb na-mi-dâd.
She kept knocking for several minutes, but nobody answered. (neutral; iterative activity)
Aspectual morphology and adverbials can thus package the same lexical compound as one bounded occurrence or repeated process.
Object boundedness changes an activity
بررسی کردن can denote an ongoing activity or a completed accomplishment. A bounded object and an endpoint adverb favor completion; a bare plural object and a duration phrase need not.
کارشناس پرونده را در دو ساعت بررسی کرد.
kârshenâs parvande râ dar do sâ'at barrasi kard.
The expert examined the file in two hours. (formal-neutral; bounded object and endpoint)
کارشناس دو ساعت پروندههای قدیمی را بررسی کرد، اما کار تمام نشد.
kârshenâs do sâ'at parvande-hâ-ye qadimi râ barrasi kard, ammâ kâr tamâm na-shod.
The expert spent two hours examining old files, but the work was not finished. (formal-neutral; duration without culmination)
The first licenses a completion inference. The second explicitly cancels it. This contrast shows why no inventory can label کردن itself simply “telic.”
State, onset, and activity
Alternations with داشتن، شدن, and کردن can locate different phases in one conceptual domain:
| Predicate | Profile | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| به موضوع علاقه داشتن | state | hold an interest |
| به موضوع علاقهمند شدن | onset/change | become interested |
| کسی را علاقهمند کردن | caused onset | make someone interested |
| دربارهی موضوع تحقیق کردن | activity | research the topic |
سالها به معماری روستایی علاقه داشت، اما پس از آن سفر به مرمت بناهای قدیمی علاقهمند شد.
sâl-hâ be me'mâri-ye rustâyi alâqe dâsht, ammâ pas az ân safar be marammat-e banâ-hâ-ye qadimi alâqe-mand shod.
For years she was interested in rural architecture, but after that trip she became interested in restoring old buildings. (formal-neutral; state versus onset)
Duration alone does not make داشتن stative or کردن active; these are properties of stored predicates and their construal. داشتن versus کردن: State and Activity gives the lexical inventory.
Passive-looking شدن and result ambiguity
شدن may form an inchoative compound, a lexical passive-like counterpart, or the finite auxiliary after a past participle. Surface resemblance does not erase the distinction.
در جلسه باز شد.
dar-e jalse bâz shod.
The meeting-room door opened. (neutral; inchoative change)
در جلسه بهوسیلهی مسئول ساختمان باز شد.
dar-e jalse be-vasile-ye mas'ul-e sâkhtemân bâz shod.
The meeting-room door was opened by the building manager. (formal; agent phrase favors passive interpretation)
نامه پس از بازبینی مدیر ارسال شد.
nâme pas az bâzbini-ye modir ersâl shod.
The letter was sent after the manager's review. (formal; conventional passive predicate)
The by-phrase and lexical predicate make the readings observable; the label “passive” should follow those diagnostics, not the mere presence of شد.
A diagnostic exchange
— بررسی را تمام کردی؟ — دو ساعت روی پرونده کار کردم، ولی هنوز چند سند مانده است. — پس رویداد پایان نیافته؛ فقط زمانش محدود بوده است.
— barrasi râ tamâm kardi? — do sâ'at ru-ye parvande kâr kardam, vali hanuz chand sanad mânde ast. — pas ruvidâd pâyân na-yâfte; faqat zamân-ash mahdud bude ast.
— Did you finish the review? — I worked on the file for two hours, but several documents remain. — Then the event did not reach an endpoint; only its duration was bounded. (academic diagnostic dialogue)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating کردن as proof of an intentional agent
❌ باد پنجره را باز کرد پس باد یک عامل آگاه است.
Incorrect — کردن introduces causation here, but a natural force has no intention.
✅ باد ناگهان در حیاط را باز کرد.
bâd nâgahân dar-e hayât râ bâz kard.
The wind suddenly opened the courtyard door. (nonagentive cause)
2. Calling every شدن compound passive
❌ بچه بزرگ شد یک مجهول است.
Incorrect — بزرگ شدن describes the subject's change of state and contains no suppressed transitive event.
✅ بچه در این دو سال خیلی بزرگ شد.
bachche dar in do sâl kheyli bozorg shod.
The child grew a lot over these two years. (change of state)
3. Assigning telicity from the light verb alone
❌ هر فعلی با زدن یک رویداد لحظهای است.
Incorrect — قدم زدن is durative, and در زدن can be iterated.
✅ یک ساعت در پارک قدم زدیم.
yek sâ'at dar pârk qadam zadim.
We walked in the park for an hour. (atelic activity)
4. Generating a pair by analogy alone
❌ قیمتها را تغییر کردم و قیمتها تغییر شدند.
Incorrect in the ordinary alternation — the intransitive partner is تغییر کردن, not a mechanically generated تغییر شدن.
✅ شرایط بازار تغییر کرد و شرکت قیمتها را تغییر داد.
sharâyet-e bâzâr taghyir kard va sherkat qeymat-hâ râ taghyir dâd.
Market conditions changed, and the company changed its prices.
Key Takeaways
- The nonverbal element, light verb, object, quantification, and context jointly determine event structure.
- کردن often adds a cause; شدن often profiles change, but causation does not entail intentional agency and change does not entail passive voice.
- Telicity belongs to the complete event description, not to one light verb.
- Bounded objects and endpoint adverbials can turn an activity into an accomplishment reading.
- Broad alternations guide analysis, but lexical selection decides which Persian predicates actually exist.
