Questions & Answers about Havyar mı? Şımarık veliahtın bu kaprisi çok fazla!
How does the rhetorical echo question work in "Havyar mı?"
The speaker is repeating the word havyar in disbelief. By simply attaching the question particle mı to a noun, you create a rhetorical echo question. It conveys surprise or annoyance, much like saying "Did you just say caviar?" or "Caviar, really?" in English.
Why does "kapris" have an "-i" at the end here?
The -i is the third-person possessive suffix. It links with the genitive suffix on veliahtın (of the heir) to form the possessive compound veliahtın kaprisi (the heir's caprice). The word bu (this) just sits inside the phrase to specify which caprice it is, but doesn't break the grammatical link.
Why is the 't' in "veliahtın" not softened to a 'd'?
Turkish usually softens a final hard consonant when a vowel suffix is added, known as consonant mutation. However, veliaht (heir) is a loanword from Arabic. Many foreign loanwords ending in -t are exceptions to this rule and keep their hard t. You have likely seen this before with words like hayat (life, hayatı) or bilet (ticket, bileti).
Is "çok fazla" used the exact same way as "too much" in English here?
Exactly! While çok fazla translates literally to "very much" or "too much" in terms of quantity, it is also used idiomatically to describe a situation, demand, or behavior that has crossed a line into being unacceptable or overwhelming.
