Rhetorical echo questions (mı, mi)

Rhetorical Echo Questions

When someone tells you something completely absurd, repeat their words back to them in disbelief using the question particle mı / mi / mu / mü.

Place the question particle immediately after the word or phrase that surprises you. The particle is written as a separate word and follows 4-way vowel harmony.

The spoiled heir wants a new mansion?
Şımarık veliaht yeni bir malikâne mi istiyor?

By placing the particle right after the shocking piece of information, you emphasize exactly what you find ridiculous.

Is the butler going to listen to these caprices?
Bu kaprisleri uşak mı dinleyecek?

Echoing Fragments

You do not always need to repeat a full sentence. You can echo a single noun or a short phrase to express your outrage.

Caviar? This caprice of the spoiled heir is too much!
Havyar mı? Şımarık veliahtın bu kaprisi çok fazla!
A bathtub full of champagne?
Şampanya dolu bir küvet mi?

When the demand involves bizarre actions, place the question particle right after the ridiculous object or setting.

Is he washing his fur coat in the bathtub?
Kürkünü küvette mi yıkıyor?

Compounding the Disbelief

When reacting to someone whose extravagant caprices know no bounds, combine these echo questions with longer structures to capture the full scope of your shock.

As if it weren't enough that he bought a purebred horse, did he order a fur coat for the horse?
Safkan at aldığı yetmiyormuş gibi, at için kürk mü sipariş vermiş?
A private masseur for the butler?
Uşak için özel masör mü?
Is the masseur talking to himself out of shock?
Masör şaşkınlıktan kendi kendine mi konuşuyor?
