Questions & Answers about İş hayatında başarılı olmak için girişken olmak lazımdı.
How does the suffix in girişken work, and what is its root verb?
It comes from the verb girişmek, which means "to undertake," "to engage in," or "to tackle." The suffix -ken is the tendency suffix (a variation of -gEn adapted for vowel harmony and consonant assimilation after the voiceless ş). So, a girişken person is someone who naturally tends to engage with people or take the initiative, giving us the meanings "outgoing," "sociable," or "enterprising."
Why is the word olmak used twice in this sentence?
Both başarılı (successful) and girişken (sociable/enterprising) are adjectives. To express "to be successful" or "to be sociable," they must be paired with the helper verb olmak (to be). The first one is used with için ("in order to be successful"), and the second acts as the subject of the necessity ("being sociable was necessary").
Could I say gerekiyordu instead of lazımdı here?
Yes, absolutely! Girişken olmak gerekiyordu means the exact same thing. Remember that lazım is an adjective ("necessary"), so it simply takes the past copula -dı to mean "it was necessary." Gerekmek is a verb, so we usually use the past continuous tense -yordu to express an ongoing past necessity.
