Questions & Answers about Pasif bir hamleden yana olmak çok riskli.
How exactly does hamleden yana olmak translate to 'being in favor of a move'?
The postposition yana requires the ablative case (-dan/-den) and translates to 'in favor of' or 'on the side of'. So hamleden yana means 'in favor of a move'. We pair it with the infinitive olmak (to be) to create the noun phrase 'being in favor of a move'.
Why is olmak used in the infinitive form here instead of being conjugated?
Here, olmak is acting as the subject of the sentence: 'Being in favor of a passive move'. In Turkish, you use the dictionary/infinitive form (-mak/-mek) when a verb acts as a noun phrase that represents a general action or concept.
Why is it pasif bir hamle instead of bir pasif hamle?
This is a strict word order rule in Turkish. When a noun takes both a descriptive adjective and the indefinite article bir (a/an), the adjective must come first. The pattern is almost always Adjective + bir + Noun.
Does yana always mean 'in favor of', or can it be used physically?
It comes from the noun yan (side). While -dan yana is heavily used for abstract stances ('in favor of' or 'regarding'), it also appears in physical or temporal contexts, like the common phrase bu yana (since / up to this point).
