Questions & Answers about O çok kaba, bu yüzden ona bir tokat atasım var.
How is atasım var formed to mean I have an urge?
It comes from the verb atmak. We add the internal urge suffix -ası to get atası, and then the first-person possessive ending -m to make atasım (my urge to throw). Combined with var, it literally means my urge to throw exists.
Why use a form of atmak (to throw) when the English translation says to slap?
In Turkish, to slap someone is a set phrase: tokat atmak (literally to throw a slap). Because of this collocation, bir tokat atasım var is the standard way to express an urge to slap someone.
Why is the dative pronoun ona used here instead of the accusative onu?
The action tokat atmak directs the slap toward someone, so the person receiving it takes the dative case. You are literally throwing a slap to him, which is why o becomes ona.
The lesson mentions using either var or gelmek with this structure. Could I use geldi here instead?
Yes, you could easily say ona bir tokat atasım geldi. The difference is subtle: atasım var describes an ongoing state or feeling (I have an urge), whereas atasım geldi emphasizes spontaneity, describing the exact moment the feeling hits you (I suddenly got the urge).
