Questions & Answers about Sosyal medya, faydalı olmakla beraber zaman kaybettirir.
How does the phrase olmakla beraber work in this sentence?
It combines the infinitive olmak (to be) with the instrumental suffix -la (with) and the word beraber (together). The structure -makla beraber means 'along with doing/being' or 'while at the same time'. It's often used to link two contrasting facts, like being useful but also wasting time.
Could I use birlikte instead of beraber here?
Yes, absolutely. faydalı olmakla birlikte means exactly the same thing. Both -makla beraber and -makla birlikte are interchangeable, formal ways to say 'along with [verb]ing'.
Why use the causative form kaybettirir instead of just kaybeder?
Kaybetmek means 'to lose', so if you said zaman kaybeder, it would mean social media itself loses time. By adding the causative suffix -tir to make kaybettirmek (to cause to lose), you are saying that social media causes you to lose time, which is the standard Turkish way to say something 'wastes time'.
Why is the final verb in the aorist (broad) tense (-ir)?
The aorist tense is used for general facts, timeless truths, and habits. Because wasting time is presented as a general characteristic of social media rather than a specific event happening right now, the aorist tense is the perfect fit.
