Questions & Answers about Esnaf seramik vazo için makul bir fiyat istiyor, değil mi?
In English we match the tag to the verb, like 'doesn't he?'. Why is it just değil mi here instead of istemiyor mu?
In Turkish, değil mi? acts as a fixed question tag when you are seeking confirmation, much like saying 'right?' in English. You can simply add değil mi? to the end of your statement regardless of the tense, person, or verb used in the main sentence.
Is istiyor (wants) the normal way to say a shop is 'charging' or 'asking' a certain price?
Yes! While English speakers usually talk about 'asking' or 'charging' a price, in Turkish the natural phrasing is fiyat istemek (to want a price). So, makul bir fiyat istiyor perfectly translates to 'is asking a reasonable price.'
Why is the word order makul bir fiyat instead of bir makul fiyat?
What exactly is an esnaf?
Esnaf is a very common cultural term for small business owners, local shopkeepers, or artisans. Although it originally comes from an Arabic plural, in modern Turkish it is used both as a singular noun for one shopkeeper (as in this sentence) and collectively for local tradespeople in general.
