Questions & Answers about Eğer her gün çalışmazsan, aynı seviyede kalırsın.
The current lesson is about ister ... ister .... Could we use that structure here instead of Eğer ... -san?
No, because ister ... ister ... expresses indifference, meaning 'whether you do X or Y, the result is the same'. This sentence states a direct cause-and-effect condition: the result (staying at the same level) only happens if you don't practice. Therefore, we need the standard conditional suffix -sa/-se.
How is the word çalışmazsan put together?
It is built from the verb root çalış (to work/practice). To this, we add maz (the negative aorist suffix), followed by sa (the conditional suffix 'if'), and finally n (the personal ending for 'you'). Together, they mean 'if you do not practice'.
Why do we use the aorist tense in both çalışmazsan and kalırsın?
The aorist tense is used for general facts, habits, and likely conditional outcomes. Because 'If you do not practice, you stay at the same level' is a general rule of learning, the aorist is the most natural tense to use in both halves of the sentence.
Is the word Eğer strictly necessary?
No, it is optional. The suffix -sa/-se on the verb already provides the 'if' meaning. Adding Eğer at the beginning of the sentence simply warns the listener early on that a condition is being set, making the sentence easier to follow and adding a bit of emphasis.
