Questions & Answers about Meteoroloji, bu yaz büyük bir kuraklık olacağını haber veriyor.
How is olacağını formed, and what does it mean here?
It translates to 'that there will be' (literally, 'its future happening'). It is built from the verb root ol (to be/happen), the future clause suffix -acağ (mutated from -acak), the 3rd person possessive -ı, the buffer letter -n-, and the accusative case -ı.
Why does olacağını end with the accusative case -ı?
The main verb phrase haber vermek (to give news / to inform) takes the accusative case when you specify exactly what news is being delivered. Since the entire future clause acts as the specific direct object being reported, it gets the accusative ending.
In these future clauses, the subject usually gets a genitive ending. Why doesn't büyük bir kuraklık have one?
You are right that the subject of a clause like this normally takes the genitive case. However, because büyük bir kuraklık is indefinite (it means 'a great drought' rather than 'the great drought'), the genitive suffix is dropped. The possessive suffix on olacağını still correctly points back to it as the subject of the happening.
Why is the word order büyük bir kuraklık instead of bir büyük kuraklık?
