Questions & Answers about Bu ev çok hoş.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, the 'to be' verb (like 'am', 'is', 'are') is usually attached to the end of the word as a suffix. However, for the third-person singular (he/she/it), there is often no suffix at all! So, çok hoş literally means 'very pleasant', but as a complete sentence, it translates to 'is very pleasant'.
Is hoş the same as güzel (beautiful) or iyi (good)?
They are similar but have slightly different flavors. Güzel is usually translated as 'beautiful' or 'nice' (often about appearance), and iyi means 'good'. Hoş specifically means 'pleasant', 'agreeable', or 'charming'. You will often hear it used when a place or a person gives you a nice, comfortable feeling.
If I wanted to say 'This is a very pleasant house', how would the word order change?
You would say Bu çok hoş bir ev. In our current sentence, Bu ev (This house) is the subject. If you want to say 'This is a very pleasant house', Bu (This) becomes the subject by itself, and the word bir (a/an) is placed right before the noun.
Would I need to make hoş plural if I were talking about multiple houses?
No, you would not. In Turkish, when the subject is plural (like Bu evler meaning 'These houses') but refers to non-human things, the adjective describing them at the end of the sentence usually stays in its base, singular form. You would simply say Bu evler çok hoş.
