Questions & Answers about Naylon poşet çok zararlı, onun yerine bez çanta taşı.
How does "onun yerine" literally translate to mean "instead"?
Yer means "place". To say "instead of it", Turkish literally says "to its place". We take the pronoun o (it) and add the genitive suffix to get onun (its). Then we take yer (place), add the possessive -i (its place), a buffer -n-, and the dative -e (to). So, onun yerine literally means "to its place", which we translate as "instead" or "instead of it".
Why does the Turkish sentence say "Naylon poşet" (singular) but the English says "Nylon bags" (plural)?
In Turkish, when you are talking about a general category or making a general statement about something, you often use the singular form without the plural suffix -lar or -ler. Saying Naylon poşet çok zararlı sounds much more natural for a general fact than using the plural.
Why doesn't "bez çanta" have a compound noun suffix (like bez çantası)?
When the first word is the material that the second word is made of, Turkish treats it like an adjective. Bez means "cloth", so bez çanta is just "cloth bag". You don't need the compound noun ending that you would use for a phrase like kadın çantası (women's bag).
What is the suffix -lı doing in the word "zararlı"?
