Questions & Answers about Tasarımcının yeni koleksiyonunu severek alıyoruz.
How does severek translate to "gladly"? Doesn't sevmek mean "to love"?
Yes, sevmek means "to love" or "to like." The suffix -(y)erek attaches to a verb to show how an action is done, meaning "by doing" or "while doing." Literally, severek alıyoruz means "we buy it by loving it." In natural English, we usually translate this as doing something "gladly," "happily," or "willingly."
Why does koleksiyonunu end with two -u suffixes?
The first -u is the possessive suffix, linking the collection to the designer (tasarımcının koleksiyonu means "the designer's collection"). The second -u is the specific direct object (accusative) marker, because we are buying a specific known thing. The -n- in the middle is just a buffer letter used to connect two suffixes that start with vowels.
Could I use alarak instead of severek if I wanted to say "by buying"?
Exactly! If you wanted to say "we love the designer's new collection by buying it," you would say alarak seviyoruz. The -(y)arak or -(y)erek suffix always goes on the verb that describes how you are performing the main action.
Why use the present continuous alıyoruz (we are buying) when the English translation says "we buy"?
