Questions & Answers about Takım kimi yenecek? Eski şampiyonu yenecek mi?
Why is there no mi in the first sentence, but there is one in the second?
The first sentence uses the question word kimi (whom). In Turkish, if a sentence already has a specific question word (like who, where, or why), you do not use the yes/no question particle mi. The second sentence is a yes/no question, so it requires mi at the end.
How is the future tense question formed in yenecek mi?
You take the verb root yen (to beat), add the future suffix ecek, and then add the question particle mi as a separate word. Because the subject is third-person singular (the team), we don't add a personal suffix to mi. If it were "Will you beat?", it would be yenecek misin?
Why do we say kimi and şampiyonu instead of just kim and şampiyon?
Both of these words are the direct objects of the verb yenmek (to beat) — they receive the action. To show this, Turkish adds the specific direct object ending (the accusative case). kim becomes kimi (whom), and şampiyon becomes şampiyonu (the champion), following 4-way vowel harmony.
The English translation says "Will they beat...", but the verb yenecek is singular. Why isn't it yenecekler?
