Questions & Answers about Bu kutu çok ağır, ben kaldırayım mı?
How is kaldırayım built from the dictionary verb?
The verb is kaldırmak (to lift). We take the stem kaldır- and add the optative suffix -a (used for making proposals or offers). Then we add the buffer letter -y- to separate the vowels, followed by the personal ending -ım for 'I'. This gives us kaldırayım (let me lift).
How does adding mı change the meaning here?
On its own, kaldırayım is an affirmative statement meaning 'let me lift' or 'I will lift'. When you follow it with the question particle mı, it turns into an offer asking for approval: 'shall I lift?'. Notice that mı is written as a separate word but its vowel still harmonizes with the ı at the end of kaldırayım.
If the verb already has the 'I' ending, why is ben in the sentence?
Turkish often drops subject pronouns because the verb ending tells you who is acting. However, using ben here adds emphasis. The speaker is stressing that they should be the one to do the heavy lifting, essentially asking, 'Shall I be the one to lift it?'
Is kaldırmak (to lift) related to the verb kalkmak (to get up)?
