First person singular optative (-(y)AyIm)

First-Person Intentions (Let me / I will)

The first-person singular optative mood is used to express your intention to do something, volunteer for a task, or offer help. In English, it roughly translates to "Let me [do it]" or "I'll [do it]".

To form this, add the suffix -ayım or -eyim to the verb stem, following two-way vowel harmony. If the verb stem ends in a vowel, use the buffer letter y before the suffix (-yayım or -yeyim).

Verb StemVowel HarmonySuffixExample
yap- (do)a, ı, o, u-ayımyapayım (let me do)
git- (go)e, i, ö, ü-eyimgideyim (let me go)
topla- (tidy up)a, ı, o, u-yayımtoplayayım (let me tidy up)
ekle- (add)e, i, ö, ü-yeyimekleyeyim (let me add)

Note that some verbs ending in t, such as gitmek (to go) or halletmek (to sort out), change the t to a d when a suffix starting with a vowel is added (e.g., gideyim, halledeyim).

You are very busy, let me sort out this work.
Sen çok meşgulsün, bu işi ben halledeyim.
I am very tired, let me tidy up the kitchen tomorrow morning.
Çok yorgunum, mutfağı yarın sabah toplayayım.
There is a mistake in this document, let me fix it.
Bu belgede bir hata var, ben düzelteyim.
Let me put away these old toys.
Bu eski oyuncakları kaldırayım.

Offering Help (Shall I?)

By turning this form into a question, you can offer your services or check if someone wants you to carry out a task. This translates to "Shall I...?" or "Should I...?".

To form the question, simply add the question particle or mi as a separate word after the verb.

  • Use after verbs ending in -ayım.
  • Use mi after verbs ending in -eyim.
Shall I sort out the hotel room?
Otel odasını ben halledeyim mi?
Are the guests coming? Shall I tidy up the room?
Misafirler geliyor mu? Odayı toplayayım mı?
This box is very heavy, shall I lift it?

Shall I add milk to your coffee?
Kahvene süt ekleyeyim mi?
