Adam da geldi.

Questions & Answers about Adam da geldi.

How does the past tense work in geldi?
The verb root is gel- (to come). We add the witnessed past tense suffix -di to make it "came". Because the vowel in gel- is an 'e', vowel harmony dictates we use the -di version. Also, since the subject is 3rd person singular ("the man"), we do not need to add any extra personal endings to the end of the verb.
I thought -da meant "in" or "at". Why does it mean "too" here?
You are thinking of the locative suffix -da or -de, which attaches directly to the end of a word (like arabada for "in the car"). When da or de is written as a completely separate word like it is here, it means "too", "also", or "and".
If da is a separate word, why does it have to be da instead of de?
Even though it is written separately, it still follows the vowel harmony of the word right before it! The word adam has back vowels (a), so the matching word for "too" is da. If it followed a word with front vowels like Ahmet, it would be Ahmet de.
