Negative comparisons (ไม่...เท่า)

Negative Comparisons (ไม่...เท่า)

When evaluating job candidates or comparing two subjects, you often need to express that one thing is "not as [adjective] as" another. In Thai, you form this negative comparison by wrapping the adjective (or stative verb) between ไม่ (not) and เท่า (equal to / as).

The standard structure is: [Subject] + ไม่ + [Adjective] + เท่า + [Noun].

Discussing Skills and Traits

This same pattern applies seamlessly to any characteristic you want to measure, whether you are discussing someone's expertise, appearance, or professionalism.

Comparing Multiple Traits at Once

If a candidate falls short in more than one area, you can list multiple traits in a single sentence. To do this, repeat the negative word ไม่ before each adjective, but place only a single เท่า at the end of the list right before the noun you are comparing them to.

Comparing to Expectations

Instead of comparing a person to another person, you can also compare their traits to a standard or an action. For example, by placing a clause like ที่ ฉัน คาดหวัง (that I expected) immediately after เท่า, you can express that someone did not live up to your expectations.
