The Indefinite Quantifier บาง
To talk about "some" of a specific noun, Thai uses the pattern Noun + บาง + Classifier.
| Some students are interested in science. | นักเรียน บาง คน สนใจ วิทยาศาสตร์ ค่ะ |
| Some books are easy to read. | หนังสือ บาง เล่ม อ่าน ง่าย ครับ |
If the noun is understood from context or acts as its own classifier (like คน for people or วิชา for school subjects), the structure simplifies to บาง + Classifier.
| Some people like art. | บาง คน ชอบ ศิลปะ ครับ |
| Some subjects are easy. | บาง วิชา ง่าย ครับ |
Contrasting Groups
Describe mixed groups by contrasting บาง (some) with หลาย (many), usually connected by แต่ (but). The main noun can be dropped in the second half of the sentence if it is already understood.
| Many students like animals, but some do not. | นักเรียน หลาย คน ชอบ สัตว์ แต่ บาง คน ไม่ ชอบ ค่ะ |
| Some dogs are fierce, but many are kind. | หมา บาง ตัว ดุ แต่ หลาย ตัว ใจดี ครับ |
You can also repeat บาง to express "some are like this, some are like that."
| Some cats are fat, some are thin. | แมว บาง ตัว อ้วน บาง ตัว ผอม ครับ |
Interests and Differences
When discussing varying preferences, use verbs like สนใจ (to be interested) or เลือก (to choose), along with ต่างกัน (different).
| We have different hobbies. | เรา มี งานอดิเรก ต่างกัน ครับ |
| We are interested in different things. | เรา สนใจ เรื่อง ต่างกัน ค่ะ |
| What hobby do you choose? | คุณ เลือก งานอดิเรก อะไร คะ |
