Expressing "By the time" with กว่าจะ...
When a task takes a frustratingly long time, you can emphasize the delay and its consequence using the structure กว่าจะ... (by the time... [it] already...).
Place กว่าจะ at the beginning of the clause describing the delayed action, and place ก็ in the second clause before the resulting state or consequence:
กว่าจะ + [Delayed Action], [Subject] + ก็ + [Result]
This is highly useful for complaining about daily inconveniences that require too much effort, like searching for a parking space or circling around.
| By the time I could find a parking lot, I was already exhausted. |
| By the time I managed to circle the car back, I was already very frustrated. |
Missing the Moment
You can also use this structure to show that because an action took too long, a window of opportunity closed or someone else acted first. This frequently happens in traffic or lines, involving actions like changing lanes, cutting off (ปาดหน้า), or squeezing in (แทรก).
| While waiting in line, by the time I reached the cashier, someone had already cut in.
| By the time I could change lanes, that car had already cut me off.
Reactions to Congestion
Navigating a congested (แออัด) environment often provokes a reaction. To explain your direct response to a frustrating event, you can use the linker ก็เลย (so / therefore) to state your resulting action.
If a frustrating event continues to the point of causing a negative emotional reaction, use จน (until / to the point that) to connect the ongoing action to your feeling.
| He cut me off, so I honked the horn. |
| I heard him honk the horn until I felt annoyed. |
