Questions & Answers about Kan vi komma överens om en tid?
How is komma överens different from hålla med?
Both translate to "agree" in English, but they are used differently. Hålla med means to share someone's opinion (e.g., Jag håller med dig - I agree with you). Komma överens means to reach a mutual decision, compromise, or arrangement together, like agreeing on a time or a contract.
Why do we use the preposition om instead of på ("on")?
In Swedish, the set phrase is komma överens om något (to agree on or about something). Direct translation of English prepositions rarely works, and here, om functions more like "about" or "regarding" the time you are both deciding on.
What exactly is the word överens and can it be used with other verbs?
Överens is an adverb that means "of one mind" or "in agreement." While it is most commonly paired with komma (to reach an agreement), you will also frequently see it with the verb vara, as in vi är överens (we are in agreement).
If we wanted to say "Can we agree to meet at a certain time," how would the structure change?
You would keep the preposition om and add an infinitive phrase starting with att (to). The sentence would become: Kan vi komma överens om att träffas en viss tid? (Can we agree to meet at a certain time?).
