Questions & Answers about Jo, det gör vi! Hur dags ska jag plocka upp dig?
What is the difference between asking "hur dags" and just using "när" or "vilken tid"?
While när means a general "when" (which could refer to a date or a season), hur dags specifically asks for a time on the clock. It means "at what time" and is highly idiomatic for arranging plans. You could also use vilken tid, which means the exact same thing, but hur dags is very common in everyday spoken Swedish.
Why does the speaker say "Jo" instead of "Ja" for "Yes"?
The word jo is specifically used to answer affirmatively to a negative statement or question. Even though we cannot see the previous sentence here, the use of Jo, det gör vi! tells us the other person just said something negative, like "We do not have plans today, right?"
How does the phrasing "det gör vi" work to mean "we do"?
In Swedish, you cannot usually leave a helper verb hanging by itself to echo an action like in the English "we do". Instead, you use det as a placeholder object for whatever action was just mentioned, plus the verb göra (to do). So literally, you are saying "that do we".
Is "plocka upp" an exact translation of the English phrasal verb "pick up"?
Yes, in this context it works exactly the same way as in English, meaning to collect someone in a vehicle. Remember that as a Swedish phrasal verb, the spoken stress lands heavily on the particle upp, rather than on the verb plocka.
