Questions & Answers about Jag tog på mig badrocken eftersom vädret var isande kallt.
What is the exact role of isande here, and how is it different from just saying iskallt?
Isande is the present participle of the verb isa (to freeze or chill). In this sentence, it functions as an intensifying adverb modifying the adjective kallt (cold). While iskallt is a common compound adjective meaning "ice-cold," using the participle phrase isande kallt (freezing cold or piercingly cold) puts more poetic emphasis on the active, chilling effect the weather has on you.
Why doesn't isande get a -t ending to agree with the ett word vädret, since kallt does?
Present participles (words ending in -ande or -ende) are strictly indeclinable in Swedish. They never change their endings to match gender or number, whether they are used as adjectives or adverbs. Only the standard adjective kallt takes the neuter -t to agree with vädret.
Could I change the word order to jag tog mig på badrocken?
No, that would change the meaning completely! Ta på sig is a phrasal verb meaning "to put on (clothes)." The stressed particle på must come directly after the verb and before the reflexive pronoun mig. If you said tog mig på, it would mean you touched yourself!
If I wanted to add inte to the second half of the sentence, where would it go?
It would go right before the verb var: ...eftersom vädret inte var isande kallt. Because eftersom starts a subordinate clause, you must follow the rule where sentence adverbs like inte or alltid are placed before the conjugated verb.
