Questions & Answers about Om vi tyckte om bilresan? Den var en hemsk katastrof.
Why does the first sentence start with 'Om' instead of a verb like a normal question?
This is an echo response. The speaker is emphatically repeating a question they were just asked before answering it. While English usually just repeats the question ('Did we like the car journey?'), Swedish frames it as an isolated indirect question ('Whether we liked the car journey?'), implying a hidden main clause like 'Are you asking if...'.
There are two instances of 'om' in the first sentence. Are they doing the same thing?
No, they have completely different functions here. The first Om is a conjunction meaning 'if' or 'whether', which sets up the echo question. The second om is a particle that belongs to the verb tycka, forming the phrasal verb tycka om (to like).
Since the first sentence is a question, why is the word order 'vi tyckte' (subject-verb) rather than 'tyckte vi' (verb-subject)?
Because an isolated Om-clause is grammatically a subordinate clause. It follows normal subordinate word order, meaning the subject comes before the verb. If you wanted to add a sentence adverb like verkligen (really), it would go before the verb as well: Om vi verkligen tyckte om bilresan?
Why does the second sentence use 'Den' for 'It' instead of 'Det'?
Den is used because it refers back to bilresan, which is an en-word (en resa). You only use det for 'it' when referring to ett-words, an entire previous clause, or a general, unspecified concept.
