Questions & Answers about Du måste ha stor viljestyrka, oavsett om du springer eller cyklar.
Does oavsett always need om after it?
No. Oavsett on its own acts as a preposition meaning "regardless of" and is followed directly by a noun phrase, like oavsett vädret (regardless of the weather). You add om when you need to say "regardless of whether" or "regardless of if", which introduces a full subordinate clause like om du springer eller cyklar.
Why does the sentence use stor (big/great) instead of mycket (much) for willpower?
In Swedish, abstract nouns that describe personal qualities, traits, or capacities—such as viljestyrka (willpower), tålamod (patience), or mod (courage)—usually pair with the adjective stor rather than the word mycket. Just as in English, you have "great willpower" (stor viljestyrka).
What happens to the word order if I want to add a sentence adverb like alltid (always) or inte (not) after oavsett om?
Because oavsett om introduces a subordinate clause, it triggers standard subordinate clause word order. This means any sentence adverb must be placed directly after the subject and before the verb. If you wanted to say "regardless of whether you always run", it would be oavsett om du alltid springer.
Can I use oberoende av instead of oavsett in this sentence?
Yes, oberoende av om (independent of whether) is a direct synonym for oavsett om and would be grammatically correct here. However, oavsett om is generally more common, slightly less formal, and flows very naturally in everyday conversation.
