Questions & Answers about Det är den stökiga festen som faktiskt är olaglig.
How does the prefix o- work in the word olaglig?
The prefix o- is the most common way to make a word into its opposite in Swedish, similar to 'un-', 'in-', or 'il-' in English. Here, lag means 'law', laglig means 'legal', and adding o- turns it into olaglig (illegal).
Why is it olaglig and not olagligt or olagliga at the end of the sentence?
Even though it is at the end of the sentence, olaglig describes festen (the party). Because en fest is an en-word and we are talking about a single party, the adjective keeps its base form without an added -t or -a.
Why does the adverb faktiskt come before the verb är?
This sentence contains a subordinate clause introduced by som (som faktiskt är olaglig). In Swedish subordinate clauses, adverbs like faktiskt (actually) or inte (not) must be placed before the verb. This is often taught as the BIFF rule.
The translation says 'loud party', but doesn't stökig usually mean 'messy'?
Yes! When talking about a physical space like a room, stökig means 'messy' or 'untidy'. However, when used to describe events, crowds, or people (like a party or a classroom), it takes on the meaning of 'rowdy', 'disorderly', or 'loud'.
