Questions & Answers about Vi måste jämföra likheten med ett annat mönster.
Why is it annat here instead of annan?
Annat is the neuter form of the word for 'other' or 'another'. It matches the noun mönster (pattern), which is an ett-word (ett mönster). If we were talking about an en-word, like en bild (a picture), we would use en annan bild.
If I wanted to say 'other patterns' instead of 'another pattern', how would this change?
It would become med andra mönster. The plural form of 'other' is andra. The noun mönster is an ett-word ending in a consonant, which means its plural form looks exactly the same as its singular form.
How is the word likheten built?
It comes from the adjective lik, which means 'similar' or 'alike'. By adding the suffix -het (which works like the English '-ness' or '-ity'), it becomes the en-word noun likhet (similarity). Here, it has the definite ending -en, meaning 'the similarity'.
Why isn't there an att (to) before jämföra?
Måste (must / have to) is a modal verb. Just like in English, Swedish modal verbs are followed directly by the infinitive form of the next verb without using att (to). So you say måste jämföra (must compare), never måste att jämföra.
