Questions & Answers about Jag missförstår dig inte. – Jo, du missförstår faktiskt allt.
Why does the second speaker use jo instead of ja for 'Yes'?
In Swedish, jo is a special word for 'yes' used specifically to contradict a negative statement or answer a negative question. Because the first person's sentence includes the negative word inte, the second person must use jo to contradict them and essentially say 'Yes, you actually do.'
How is the verb missförstår formed?
Just like in English with 'understand' and 'misunderstand', you simply add the prefix miss- to the verb förstår. It follows the exact same rules and conjugations as the base verb.
Why does faktiskt come right after the verb?
This sentence follows the Swedish V2 rule, meaning the verb must be the second piece of information. The subject du is in the first position, so the verb missförstår must be second. Sentence adverbs like faktiskt (actually) or inte (not) usually drop in right after the verb in a standard main clause.
Why does the sentence end with allt instead of alla?
Allt is the neuter form used for uncountable things, and it translates to 'everything' in a broad, general sense. Alla is the plural form and means 'everyone' or 'all of them' when talking about specific people or countable objects.
