Jag har inte sovit på ett helt dygn!

Questions & Answers about Jag har inte sovit på ett helt dygn!

Why do we use på here for "for" instead of i?
In Swedish, you use i to say how long you do something, but you use to say how long you have NOT done something. Because this sentence is negative (inte sovit), we must use to mean "for".
What is the difference between ett dygn and en dag?
A dygn is specifically a full 24-hour period including both day and night. A dag usually means just the daytime. Using dygn emphasizes that you have been awake for 24 hours straight.
Why does the word for "whole" have a -t at the end (helt)?
Helt is an adjective describing the noun dygn. Because dygn is an ett-word (ett dygn), the adjective takes the neuter -t ending, changing hel into helt.
Why do we use sovit instead of sov?
Sovit is the supine form of the verb sova (to sleep). Just like in English, you use this form after the helper verb har (have) to say what you "have done" or in this case, "have not done" (har inte sovit).
