Learn Swedish: Vi vet att kvinnan inte är ingenjören, utan arkitekten. - We know that the woman is not the engineer, but rather the architect.

utan means "but rather" or "but instead." You use it to directly correct a negative statement. Because the first part says the woman is not the engineer (inte är ingenjören), we use utan to introduce what she actually is. If the first part were a positive statement, you would use men.

Doesn't utan also mean "without"? How do I tell the difference?

Yes, utan is also the preposition for "without" (like in kaffe utan mjölk for "coffee without milk"). You can easily tell them apart by looking at the sentence structure. In this sentence, it comes right after a negative statement and connects two contrasting ideas, so it functions as "but rather".

Wait, why is the word order inte är? Shouldn't inte come after the verb?

In a normal, standalone sentence, it does! You would say kvinnan är inte ingenjören. However, the word att (that) starts a subordinate clause (a dependent, secondary part of the sentence). In Swedish subordinate clauses, negative words like inte must come before the verb.

I thought Swedish drops the article for professions. Why do we say ingenjören and arkitekten?
